Detroit -- Grand Valley State (3-1, 3-1 GLIAC) made the trip to Detroit this afternoon to take on the Warrior ladies (4-1, 4-1 GLIAC) on the WSU Tennis Courts in a battle of GLIAC powers. Wayne State took the match 5-4 and cemented themselves as a force in this league behind a key victory at #2 singles by
Julia Kamenko (Thornhill, Ont. / Vaughan S.S.) 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 over Leah Dancz. The two also did battle in #2 doubles with Kamenko and
Alex Poissant (Laval, Que. / Vanier Prep) falling to Dancz and Allison Fecko 8-3.
The Lakers took an early lead following doubles as they ran away #3 doubles 8-1 to go along with their #2 doubles win.
Yahsha Moore (West Bloomfield, Mich. / West Bloomfield) and
Anne Li Briand (Repentigny, Que. / École Secondaire Félix-Leclerc) took home a quick 8-1 victory for the Warriors to keep Wayne State in good position heading into singles play.
Moore continued her quick day with a 6-3, 6-2 victory in the top singles spot while
Alex Poissant made up for her doubles loss with a 6-2, 6-4 win at #3 singles over Lexi Rice. Li Briand started slow at #4 singles but after winning the first set tiebreaker 7-6 (5) she rolled in the second set 6-1 setting up that #2 battle for the deciding point in this one and Kemenko roared back to take it home.
The Wayne State women will hit the road this weekend as they take on Tiffin, Ohio Dominican and Ashland on Friday, Saturday and Sunday respectively.
