Warriors Win Sixth Straight, 3-1, At Northern Michigan


MARQUETTE, Mich. - The Wayne State University volleyball team (11-3, 6-0 GLIAC) played its first road conference match of the season Friday night at Northern Michigan University (11-4, 4-2 GLIAC), picking up a 3-1 victory (25-18, 25-16, 19-25, 25-14) to extend its winning streak to six matches.

The Warriors hit a season-best .366 as they defeated the Wildcats for the third straight year.

Candice Ottey (Ajax, Ont.) totaled a team-high 12 kills, while Madie Kent (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./Grosse Pointe North) had eight with a squad-best nine digs.  Essence Jackson-Jones (Muskegon, Mich.) totaled seven kills and five blocks.

Cydney Biessel (Ruby, Mich./Yale) amassed 40 assists, two shy of her season-high, and Kelsey Bonewits (Griffith, Ind.) finished with five blocks and six kills in only seven attempts (.857).

Tied at 14-14 in the opening set, Wayne State won 11 of the final 15 points.  The Warriors never trailed in the second set and took a 2-0 lead as Ottey made five of her 12 kills.

Wayne State had an 11-7 lead in the third, but Northern Michigan took five of the next six points and went on to win a 25-19 result.

A nine-point run early in the fourth gave the Warriors a 14-4 lead in the fourth set as they went on to hand the Wildcats their second loss in their last eight matches.

Wayne State will play at Michigan Tech on Saturday at 1:00.
