Volleyball Earns 3-2 Victory Over Wheeling Jesuit

Warriors avenge last week's loss to Cardinals

FINDLAY, Ohio - The Wayne State University volleyball team (4-2) earned a five-set victory (28-26, 17-25, 25-20, 19-25, 15-9) over Wheeling Jesuit University (5-1) on Friday evening at the Findlay Fall Classic, handing the Cardinals their first loss of the season.

Wayne State won the first, third and fifth sets against a Wheeling Jesuit team which was on the cusp of being ranked in the top 25 of the AVCA national poll for the second straight week.  The Warriors also avenged a three-set loss to the Cardinals last Friday at the NSU Sharks Classic in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Kristen Bulkiewicz (LaSalle, Ont./Sandwich) and Madie Kent (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./Grosse Pointe North) each finished with a double-double.  Bulkiewicz had 12 digs and led all players with 21 kills, while Kent racked up 10 kills and 17 digs.

Cydney Biessel (Ruby, Mich./Yale) nearly had a double-double as well, totaling 38 assists and nine digs as well as five kills.  Kelsey Bonewits (Griffith, Ind.), Essence Jackson-Jones (Muskegon, Mich.) and Candice Ottey (Ajax, Ont.) all had nine blocks apiece and combined for 16 kills.

Lindsey Graciak (Westland, Mich./Livonia Churchill) finished with a season-high 23 digs.

A 23-17 lead for Wayne State in the first set was erased by a seven-point run by Wheeling Jesuit.  Facing set point twice, the Warriors battled to win the set, 28-26.

Wayne State opened up a 10-4 lead in the second set, but WJU took 17 of the next 21 points.  Down 15-11 in the third, the Warriors came back to tie it at 19-19 before grabbing six of the last seven points.

Wheeling Jesuit never trailed in the fourth, as the 25-19 decision ultimately forced a fifth and deciding set.  After surrendering the first point, Wayne State led for the duration of the set and earned the overall match victory.

The Warriors will face California (Pa.) and No. 8 Indianapolis on Saturday.
