Women's Tennis Earns 6-3 Victory at Michigan Tech

The Warriors win their sixth straight dual match to open up a three-game road trip

HOUGHTON, Mich. -- The Wayne State University women's tennis team earned its sixth straight dual match victory Thursday, winning the first of a three-game road swing in a 6-3 win at Michigan Tech.

With the victory, the Warriors improved to 8-1 overall and in the GLIAC. Wayne State hasn't dropped a match since losing 6-3 at Northwood on Sept. 11.

Wayne State opened a 2-1 lead after doubles play on Thursday. Sophomores Anastasia Burobina and Alex Poissant (Laval, Que. / Vanier Prep) earned an 8-6 victory at No. 2 doubles, while sophomore Julia Kamenko (Thornhill, Ont. / Vaughan S.S.) and freshman Andreea Mitrache (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Warren Cousino) posted an 8-0 victory at the third flight in doubles.

Juniors Anne Li Briand (Repentigny, Que. / École Secondaire Félix-Leclerc) and Yahsha Moore (West Bloomfield, Mich. / West Bloomfield) dropped their first match of the dual season at No. 1 doubles, falling 8-2 to the Michigan Tech duo of Natalia Lebedeva and Kwang Suthijindawong.

WSU won four of the six matches in singles to complete the victory. The Warriors dropped just seven games in those four straight-set triumphs. At No. 3 singles, Mitrache won 6-2, 6-1 and Burobina secured a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles.

Briand improved to 8-0 in conference singles play with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles and at the sixth flight, Poissant was a 6-2, 6-0 winner.

Wayne State continues its road trip Friday at Lake Superior for a noon match.
