Women's Tennis Tops Saginaw Valley 8-1 For Eighth Straight Win

MIDLAND, Mich. --
The Wayne State University women's tennis team closed the road portion of its conference schedule with an 8-1 victory Saturday at Saginaw Valley State University. The match was played indoors at the Midland Community Tennis Center in Midland due to rainy weather conditions.

With the victory, the Warriors won their eighth straight dual match of the season and improved to 10-1 overall and in the GLIAC. The Warriors also finished with a 6-1 record on the road in the GLIAC.

Wayne State took a 3-0 lead after doubles play. Juniors Yahsha Moore (West Bloomfield, Mich. / West Bloomfield) and Anne Li Briand (Repentigny, Que. / École Secondaire Félix-Leclerc) earned an 8-2 victory at the top flight, while sophomores Anastasia Burobina (Toronto, Ont. / Robert Bateman) and Alex Poissant (Laval, Que. / Vanier Prep) teammed up for an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles.

At the third flight, freshmen Lauren Hughes (Detroit, Mich. / Southfield) and Andreea Mitrache (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Warren Cousino) combined for an 8-0 victory.

The Warriors won five out of the six singles matches to clinch the victory. Moore earned a three-set victory over Saginaw Valley's Izabella Ismailova, winning 5-7, 7-5, 10-4. Sophomore Julia Kamenko (Thornhill, Ont. / Vaughan S.S.) won her singles match at No. 2 singles, winning 6-3, 6-0.

Burobina, Briand and Poissant also posted straight-set victories at the fourth-sixth flights in singles for the Warriors.

Wayne State returns home for a three-match homestand next weekend in Detroit. WSU will look to extend its winning streak starting Friday with Malone.
