Volleyball Falls to Ashland, 3-1

Trio of Warriors turned in double-digit kill performances.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University volleyball team (10-18, 7-10 GLIAC) dropped a four-set match against Ashland (22-6, 14-3 GLIAC) on Friday night inside the Matthaei Center. Ashland picked up votes in the latest AVCA Coaches Poll and took set one 27-25 before WSU answered with a 25-21 victory. The Eagles took set three 25-15 and set four 25-23 to take the match, 3-1.

Kristen Bulkiewicz (LaSalle, Ont. / Sandwich) led a trio of Warriors with double-digit kills with 17. Also with 10+ kills were Essence Jackson-Jones (Muskegon, Mich.) with 14 and Heather Weiss (Fort Gratiot, Mich. / Port Huron) with 11. With her 17 kills on Friday night, Bulkiewicz tied Erin Meyer (1996-99) with 1,311 kills for second all-time in program history. The record holder with 1,561 career kills is Rachel Parham (1985-87).

AU started the match with a 6-2 lead in set one. The Warriors responded to take a 10-9 lead on a poor Ashland set. WSU extended its lead to 15-12 on a kill from Weiss. Weiss continued her strong showing with a service ace to give WSU a 19-15 advantage. The Green & Gold had an opportunity to take the set at 24-23 following another kill from Weiss but AU called a timeout and responded with a 4-1 run to take the set 27-25.

Ashland led 7-5 to begin set two after a Warrior service error. Another WSU service error staked the Eagles to a 10-8 lead. WSU took a 17-14 lead after a mini 3-0 run capped by a Weiss kill. The home lead reached five at 22-17 before AU was able to slow WSU's momentum a bit but the Warriors would find a way to take the set 25-21.

The Eagles started fast in set three, leading 9-3. The AU lead ballooned to 15-6 before WSU took a timeout. AU continued to control the set and would win the set easily, 25-15.

Wayne State led for much of the fourth set until a Kara Cousins kill gave AU a 12-11 lead. From there on, the deficit was never more than four. WSU reached 20 first with a Eagle attack error to give the Warriors a 20-19 lead. Ashland took the next three points to go up 22-20. The two teams traded points down the stretch but AU took the set 25-23 to seal the victory.

Madison Reeves (Indianapolis, Ind. / Avon) was solid with 42 assist while Carlee Hunt (Waterford, Mich. / Walled Lake Northern) tallied 15 digs. Bulkiewicz also collected 11 digs to post her 35th career double-double. WSU hit .252 compared to Au's .307 hitting percentage.

WSU will finish its season on Saturday with a 2 PM match against Lake Erie. The three seniors on the roster will be honored before the match.
