Wayne State Blanked at UW-Parkside Tournament

The Warriors had three with double-digit kills against Lewis.

SOMERS, Wis. -- Wayne State University volleyball (3-5) were unable to find the win column on Friday or Saturday at the UW-Parkside Tournament. #19 Indianapolis (2-4) started the day by sweeping the Warriors (25-22, 25-19, 25-12) and Lewis defeated WSU 3-1 (25-22, 25-18, 25-27, 25-21). Three Warriors finished with double-digit kills against Lewis led by Kristen Bulkiewicz (LaSalle, Ont. / Sandwich) and Heather Weiss (Fort Gratiot, Mich. / Port Huron) with 15.

Match One - #19 Indianapolis (L, 0-3)
The opening set against Indy was back-and-forth the entire time. The Greyhounds led 10-8 following an Indy attack error and the Greyhounds stretched the lead to 13-8. The Warriors would storm back to within two at 22-20 following a kill from Essence Jackson-Jones (Muskegon, Mich.). However, Indy would hold on to take set one, 25-22.

Set two was tied at 8-8 after a kill from Madison Reeves (Indianapolis, Ind. / Avon) and WSU led 16-14 before Indy would go on a 6-1 run to take a 20-17 lead. The Greyhounds controlled the final moments of the set and would take a 2-0 match lead with a 25-19 victory.

Indy led 10-3 to open the third set as WSU struggled to find its rhythm as the Greyhounds led wire-to-wire and cruised to a 25-12 set win and 3-0 sweep.

Jackson-Jones and Weiss led WSU with six kills each while Macy Steenhuysen (Grand Rapids, Mich. / East Kentwood) collected 13 digs. Reeves handed out 23 assists.

Match Two - Lewis (L, 1-3)
The Flyers of Lewis led the opening set against WSU leading 10-6. The Green & Gold would would get as close one point at 14-13 but Lewis would pull away and led 18-13 after a Warrior attack error forcing a WSU timeout. The Warriors would go on a 7-0 run near the end of the set to cut the deficit to 24-22 before Lewis clinched the set victory, 25-22.

Lewis led 10-7 to begin the second set and would never trail. WSU would pull within three at 21-18 but the Flyers would take the 2-0 match lead with a 25-18 win.

The Warriors would win just its second set of the tournament in the third set against Lewis. The set was tied at 7-7 before WSU won three straight points to lead 10-7. Lewis tied the set up at 15-15 and again at 20-20. Lewis won three straight points to lead 23-20 before WSU answered with four straight points to take a 25-24 lead. A Mikayla Shell (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) and a Lewis ball-handling error would give the Warriors a 27-25 victory.

The Flyers and Warriors were tied at 8-8 to begin the fourth set before WSU took a 13-11 lead. Lewis led 21-17 and would take the set 25-21 and the match 3-1.

Bulkiewicz and Weiss finished with 15 kills while Candice Ottey tallied 11. Reeves collected 40 assists while Carlee Hunt (Waterford, Mich. / Walled Lake Northern) finished with 16 digs.

The Warriors begin GLIAC play at Lake Erie on Friday at 7 PM.
