DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's tennis team completed a weekend home sweep over visiting teams Sunday, defeating Ashland University 7-2.
The Warriors improved to 7-1 overall and in the GLIAC with the victory over the Eagles. WSU is also 4-0 at home.
Wayne State took a 3-0 lead by sweeping the doubles competition against Ashland. The WSU junior duo of
Anne Li Briand (Repentigny, Que. / École Secondaire Félix-Leclerc) and
Yahsha Moore (West Bloomfield, Mich.) at the top doubles flight 8-2. The pair are 7-0 at the No. 1 doubles position this season.
Sophomores
Alex Poissant (Laval, Que. / Vanier Prep) and
Anastasia Burobina also won 8-2, taking the No. 2 flight. At No. 3 doubles, freshmen
Ashley Walker (Canton, Mich. / Salem) and
Lauren Hughes (Detroit, Mich. / Southfield) tallied an 8-5 win. It was also the first victory for Walker in her first career appearance.
The Warriors went up 7-0 as the top four flights took their matches in straight sets. Moore won 6-2, 6-4 to improve to 7-1 at the top flight. Sophomore
Julia Kamenko (Thornhill, Ont. / Vaughan S.S.) won 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 2 singles spot, Burobina posted a 6-1, 6-2 triumph at No. 3 singles and Briand earned a 6-0, 6-0 win at the fourth flight.
Briand improved to 7-0 with the victory and 14-0 overall this season between singles and doubles.
Wayne State takes a break from GLIAC play and heads to the ITA Midwest Regional Tournament in Indianapolis Friday through Sunday.
