INDIANA, Pa. -- The Wayne State University women's tennis team tied a school-record for wins in a season Saturday, winning 7-2 Saturday in a non-conference matchup over No. 44-ranked Indiana University of Pennsylvania. The victory was Wayne State's 22nd of the season matching the win total of the 2011-12 WSU women's tennis squad.
The Warriors, ranked No. 45 nationally and No. 3 in the ITA Midwest Regional rankings, improved to 22-4 overall with just one regular-season match remaining on the schedule. Wayne State will face West Liberty on Sunday in a neutral dual match at 11 a.m.
Wayne State led 2-1 following doubles action, winning at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. At the second flight, sophomore
Alex Poissant (Laval, Que. / Vanier Prep) and freshman
Andreea Mitrache (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Warren Cousino) earned an 8-3 victory, while the duo of sophomore
Julia Kamenko (Thornhill, Ont. / Vaughan S.S.) and senior
Jessica Kruczek (Detroit, Mich. / Lakeview) won 8-3 at the third flight.
At No. 1 doubles, the junior pair of
Yahsha Moore (West Bloomfield, Mich. / West Bloomfield) and
Anne Li Briand (Repentigny, Que.) fell to IUP's Tanya Timko and Erika Schnaas, who won 8-5.
Wayne State dominated in singles, however, winning five of the six matches, to clinch the victory. WSU earned four straight-set victories.
Moore won 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1 singles and Poissant was a 6-4, 6-4 winner at the third singles flight. Briand fought from a set down to post a 1-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) victory at No. 4 singles.
Wayne State also pulled out tiebreaker wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles. At the fifth flight, Kamenko won a first-set tiebreak and cruised to a second-set win, posting a 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 win. Freshman
Lauren Hughes (Detroit, Mich. / Southfield) also pulled out a first-set tiebreaker triumph before also winning the second set. Hughes earned a 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 win at the sixth flight.
The victory is Wayne State's second over a nationally-ranked opponent this season. WSU defeated then No. 45-ranked Chestnut Hill, 6-3, on March 6. Indiana (Pa.) was also the No. 2 regional ranked school in the Atlantic region.
