DETROIT -- The Wayne State University volleyball team (2-5, 0-3 GLIAC) eyed its first conference victory on Friday night as Ohio Dominican (5-4, 3-0 GLIAC) came to Midtown and the Warriors started the night off right with a 25-16 set-one win. However, the Panthers would take sets two (25-21), set two (25-20) and set three (25-20) to remain unbeaten in the league.
ODU started quick in the opening stanza, leading 7-2 and forcing a WSU timeout. The Warriors responded with an 8-2 run to take a 12-10 lead on a service ace from
Grace Frazee (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian).
Hannah Moore (Louisville, Ky. / Assumption) connected for a kill to put WSU up 18-14. The Green & Gold would end the game on a 11-2 run to take the set 25-16 including the last three points, which included kills from Frazee and Moore.
The visiting Panthers again started fast in the second set, leading 6-2 after a kill from Ciara Ralston. The Warriors would never come closer than three points the rest of the set as ODU tied the match at 1-1 with a 25-21 set-two win.
An ODU service error tied set number three at 10-10 and WSU took an 11-10 lead on the next point on a kill from
Heather Weiss (Fort Gratiot, Mich. / Port Huron).
Brittany Guldan (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Walled Lake Central) collected a kill to give the home team a 16-13 lead and force 26th-year head coach Sandy Rowley and ODU to take a timeout. The Panthers stormed back following the timeout and led 22-17 before a Warrior timeout. Wayne State collected back-to-back points to pull with three at 22-19 but the visitors would take three of the last four points to take the set 25-20.
WSU led 8-5 in the fourth set after a kill from Weiss. The Panthers collected three consecutive points later in the set to tie the game at 11-11. WSU took the next two points to take a 13-11 lead but ODU would go on 9-1 run to pull away, 20-14. The Warriors trimmed the deficit to three on two occasion down the stretch including 23-20 after a kill from
Ellen Oppenheim (St. Joseph, Mich.). However, Ohio Dominican won the set, 25-20, and the match on a kill from Brianna Reder.
Moore led the offense for WSU with 14 kills while hitting .371 and tallied 14 digs for a double-double. Weiss finished with 10 kills and 16 digs while
Madison Reeves (Indianapolis, Ind, / Avon) collected 35 assists.
WSU will continue the homestand on Saturday with a 2 PM meeting with Tiffin inside the Matthaei.
