DETROIT – The Wayne State University women's tennis team earned the No. 3 seed for the 2015 GLIAC Tournament, which starts on Friday at the Midland Community Tennis Center. WSU (9-3 overall, 8-3 GLIAC) won all five home matches this season, but the youthful Warriors were just 4-3 away from Motown.
WSU will open the tournament against sixth-seeded Hillsdale at 6:45 p.m. on Friday. The Warriors fell short, 5-4, against the Chargers on Oct. 16 at Hillsdale.
The winner of the No. 3 vs. No. 6 match is slated to take on the winner of the No. 2 Northwood vs. No. 7 Saginaw Valley State contest in the second round of tournament play on Saturday, beginning at 3:45 p.m. Wayne State was topped by the Timberwolves, 6-2, on Oct. 13, and defeated the Cardinals, 6-3, this past Monday in the last match of the regular season.
WSU won the GLIAC tournament last year, the first in program history since the new competition format was instituted in 1999. In addition, Wayne State clinched seven GLIAC titles in an eight-year span (1975-82) when the league and tournament titles were combined.
The tournament will conclude on Sunday at 8:15 a.m. The champion of the GLIAC Tournament will receive an automatic qualifying bid into the 2016 NCAA Women's Tennis Tournament.
