HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Wayne State University women's tennis squad topped GLIAC opponent Michigan Tech, 8-1, on Saturday morning at Gates Tennis Courts. All six Warriors in the singles flight defeated the Huskies.
DOUBLES- Juniors
Lauren Hughes (Detroit, Mich. / Southfield) and
Ashley Walker (Canton, Mich. / Salem) won their fifth conference doubles match, 8-1, over Natalia Parra Alvarez and Kat Donovan at the third position.
- New WSU pair, freshman
Dasha Kuznetsova (Moscow, Russia / Moscow School 45) and senior
Julia Kamenko (Toronto, Ont. / Vaughan S.S.) bested Emilia Tenizbaeva and Allenca Rolim, 8-2, at the second flight.
- Junior
Andreea Mitrache (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Warren Cousino) and senior
Alex Poissant (Laval, Que. / Vanier Prep) lost in a close, 8-6, match to Vicky Quinde and Sandra Cvetanovic at No. 1 doubles.
SINGLES- Freshman
Astrid Ciellza (Techumseh, Ont. / St. Anne's S.S) won her fifth-straight singles match over Donovan, 6-0, 6-0, at the sixth flight, while Mitrache remained undefeated at the top singles flight after topping Quinde, 6-2, 6-4.
- Sophomore
Liz Ghellere (Ararangua, Brazil / Unificado) defeated Rolim in two sets, 6-2, 6-2, at the fifth position and Kuznetsova bested Tenizbaeva, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 3 singles.
- Kamenko won 6-3, 6-3, over Parra Alvarez at the fourth flight, while Poissant beat Cvetanovic, 6-3, 6-3, at the second position.
UP NEXT - WSU will travel to Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. to take on Lake Superior State on Sunday. The match is slated for 10 a.m. at Arbuckle Student Activity Center.
