DETROIT -- The Wayne State University volleyball team (12-17, 7-10 GLIAC) were eyeing an upset of #4 Ferris State (27-2, 16-1 GLIAC) on Friday night but the Bulldogs continued their excellent season with a 3-1 victory by set scores of 25-21, 16-25, 25-13, 25-12. In the process, FSU clinched the GLIAC regular season title outright and officially eliminated the Warriors from postseason play.
HOW IT HAPPENED- Following an ace from
Hailey Richardson (New Boston, Mich. / Huron) and a FSU attack error, WSU led the first set 4-1.
Emily Norscia (Livonia, Mich. / Livonia Churchill) trimmed the deficit to one with a kill and a poor Bulldog set to tie the game at 10-10. The Warriors kept fighting and after a kill from
Hannah Moore (Louisville, Ky. / Assumption) and a block from
Mikayla Shell (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington), the Warriors led 15-14. Ferris State won the next three points to take a 17-15 lead but WSU answered and tied the set at 19-19 on a kill by
Christa Raicevich (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich. / Grosse Pointe North). FSU showed its quality and went on a 5-0 run and forced WSU to take two timeouts before clinching the set victory, 25-21.
- The Warriors jumped out to a 7-2 lead after a block from Moore in the second set. Kills from Richardson, Moore and Shell extended the WSU lead to 18-9. Consecutive kills from Norscia kept WSU rolling, 21-13. The Warriors would tie the match up at 1-1 with the 25-16 set-two victory.
- The Bulldogs exited the locker room on a mission and led 8-2, 13-3 and 18-6 in the third set. Wayne State pulled within 10 at 23-13 after a block from
Michelle Asiedu (Holland, Ohio / Springfield) and Raicevich and two kills from Shell. However, it would be too little too late and FSU took a 2-1 lead with a 25-13 win.
- The momentum stayed with the visitors and the Bulldogs led the fourth set 9-4 and eventually 11-5. FSU would blow the game wide open with an 11-0 run to extend its lead to 23-7. WSU fought back with kills from Moore and back-to-back points from Shell but FSU secured the win with a 25-12 victory.
LEADING THE WARRIORS- Moore paced WSU's offensive attack with 15 kills while Shell tallied 10.

Brittany Guldan (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Walled Lake Central) dished out 34 assists while
Ellie Rodriguez (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Catholic Central) collected 20 digs.
