PAINESVILLE, Ohio -- The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (2-0) concluded the GMAC/GLIAC Challenge with an 84-46 victory over Salem International on Sunday afternoon at the Osborne Center in Painesville, Ohio. Twelve Warriors who saw minutes all contributed in scoring, including four in double-digits.
HOW IT HAPPENED - Wayne State took an early 4-0 lead off two lay-ups one each from senior
Brittany Streetman (Warren, Mich. / Lincoln) and junior
Christina Green (Southfield, Mich. / Lathrup). Streetman scored in the first three seconds of the contest after the tip-off.
- At the 3:57 mark of the first stanza, the Warriors extended their lead on an 11-0 run. Sophomore
Shannon Wilson (West Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / West Bloomfield) notched three consecutive steals and scored twice on fast break lay-ups, while classmate
Sara Ruhstorfer (Grand Blanc, Mich. / Flint Powers Catholic) tallied two points off a fast break play. WSU led 23-13 after the first period.
- The Tigers struck first in the second with a free throw from Toi Brown at the 8:38 mark. The Warriors rallied with sophomore
Payton Birchmeier (Corunna, Mich.) draining a three and freshman
Brooke Wallace (Oberlin, Ohio / Amherst Steele) scoring the next five points moving Wayne State's lead to 15.
- With seven seconds left in the half, redshirt senior
Ashley Wilson (Portage, Mich. / Northern) scored in the paint to give Wayne State its largest first half margin of 20 points.
- WSU started the third stanza cold, but at the 7:25 mark
Shannon Wilson drained one from the free throw line. After head coach
Carrie Lohr called a timeout with 6:43 left in the period, the Warriors went on a 19-6 run. Seven of those points came from
Shannon Wilson.
- Wayne State tallied 10 of the first 16 points in the fourth quarter. Freshman
India Hawkins (Detroit, Mich. / Edison Public School Academy) made two from the charity stripe. The next three baskets made were shot from the paint by Wallace,
Ashley Wilson and redshirt sophomore
Tori Bellamy (Davison, Mich.).
- With 33 seconds left in the game, Salem International's Brown was called for a technical foul. Senior
Kristen Long (Durand, Mich.) made one of two from the free throw line.
FINAL TEAM STATS - Wayne State shot 43 percent (30-for-69) from the field, while only shooting 13 percent (2-of-15) beyond the arc.
- The Warriors shot 81.5 percent from the free throw line.
- WSU grabbed 57 rebounds compared to 32 from SIU.
- Wayne State tallied 19 steals and forced 25 Salem International turnovers.
INDIVIDUAL STATS-
Shannon Wilson led the Warriors with a career-high 18 points and six steals. The sophomore also added a career-high five rebounds.

Ashley Wilson recorded 12 points with nine boards, narrowly missing her second consecutive double-double, while Wallace scored 12 points and pulled down six rebounds.
- Green tallied 10 points, while both Birchmeier and Long grabbed six rebounds.
- Salem International's Imari Bowers scored 15 points, while Samantha Aiken and Brown added 10.
UP NEXT - Wayne State will visit GLVC power Indianapolis on Thursday for a 6 p.m. tip-off at Nicoson Hall. The Warriors defeated the Greyhounds, 77-59, in the opening contest of the 2014-15 regular season.
