Women's Tennis Stays Unbeaten at Valparaiso

The Warriors won five of the six singles matches in their way to a 6-1 victory.

VALPARAISO, Ind. -- The Wayne State University women's tennis team (16-0, 12-0 GLIAC) competed for the first time since winning the 2014 GLIAC Tournament at Valparaiso (1-6) on Friday afternoon. The Warriors won five of their six singles matches on their way to a 6-1 victory over the Crusaders.

WSU has not lost since its Sweet 16 match at the NCAA Tournament on May 14, 2014.

The senior duo of Yahsha Moore (West Bloomfield, Mich.) and Anne Li Briand (Repentigny, Que. / École Secondaire Félix-Leclerc) started the afternoon with a 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles. Junior Alex Poissant (Laval, Que. / Vanier Prep) and sophomore Andreea Mitrache (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Warren Cousino) fell in the second flight of doubles, 6-3. The Warriors answered with a 6-3 win at third doubles by junior Julia Kamenko (Toronto, Ont. / Vaughan S.S.) and freshman Liz de Souza Ghellere (Ararangua, Brazil / Unificado).

Poissant dropped her No. 3 singles match 6-4, 6-1 before Kamenko regained the momentum with a win at No. 5 singles, 6-1, 6-3.

Li Briand collected her 87th career singles victory at No. 4 singles, 6-4, 6-4. Lauren Hughes (Detroit, Mich. / Southfield) won at sixth flight singles, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5).

Moore took the top flight of singles 6-1, 5-7, 6-2 and Mitrache finished the day's action with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles.

The Warriors will stay in the Hoosier state and compete at Purdue Calumet tomorrow at noon.
