Baseball Splits Doubleheader at Trevecca Nazarene

WSU won game one, 2-1, in 10 innings.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- After an extra-innings defeat on Friday, the Wayne State University baseball team (1-2) was back in action on Saturday for a doubleheader at Trevecca Nazarene (3-6) to conclude the series. WSU played its second consecutive extra-inning contest in game one but was able to collect the win this time, 2-1, in 10 innings. A five-run third inning propelled TNU to an 8-5 win in game two.

Game One (W, 2-1)
For the second straight game, Wayne State scored the game's first run. Cole Clifton (Sterling Heights. Mich. / De La Salle) and Griffin Harms (Bingham Farms, Mich. / Birmingham Groves) delivered back-to-back singles in the top of the first inning before Kyle Zimmerman (Frankfort, Mich.) drove in a run with a third straight single.

WSU's co-ace, Alex Kinch (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Pioneer), was solid and did not allow a run until the bottom of the sixth inning. The Trojans tied the game with an RBI single following a single and a walk.

Both offenses went quiet until the bottom of the eighth inning. With two outs, Tyler Burns doubled down the left field line and Hunter Newman drew a walk. Head coach Ryan Kelley called on Jared Tobey (St. Clair, Mich.) (1-0) from the bullpen to replace his starting pitcher. Tobey was able to induce a groundout to escape the inning. Tobey also worked a scoreless ninth inning.

With two outs in the top of the 10th inning, Justin Sherman (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Pioneer) battled for an eight-pitch walk and Clifton doubled into the right field corner to plate the go-ahead run.

Tobey retired the first batter in the bottom of the 10th inning before allowing a single and issuing a walk. Jeff Sorenson (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) collected the final two outs to secure the win and collected his first save since 2012.

Zimmerman finished 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI. Kinch went 7.2 innings and allowed one unearned run on six hits while striking out four.

Game Two (L, 5-8)
The Trojans took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the second inning off starter Tyler Tompson (Farmington, Mich.) (0-1). Chris Horvath (Lakeshore, Ont. / St. Anne Catholic) replaced Tompson on the mound. TNU added two more runs in the inning to extend its lead to 5-0.

The momentum stayed with the home team in the bottom of the third inning as the Trojans extended their lead to 7-0 with a two-run double.

Nick Cowen (Tecumseh, Mich.) made his collegiate debut to start the top of the fourth inning and tossed two scoreless innings.

The Trojans helped the Warriors with back-to-back errors to begin the top of the fifth inning. Pinch-hitter Randy Kuzdak (Redford, Mich. / Dearborn Divine Child) singled through the right side to plate WSU's first run of the game. A bases-loaded balk plated another run before Clifton cut TNU's lead to 7-4 with a two-run single to right center.

Jake Davis (Rochester, Mich. / Stoney Creek) took the ball to begin the bottom of the sixth inning. TNU added an insurance run with a RBI single from Tyler Tichenor. Mike Murley (Royal Oak, Mich. / Bishop Foley Catholic) entered to record the final two outs of the frame.

In need of four runs to extend the game, WSU collected back-to-back hit-by-pitches to begin the top of the seventh inning. TNU's third error of the game allowed Tobey to reach and load the bases. A sacrifice fly from Zimmerman would be all the offense WSU could muster as Justin Dailey struck out Harms to end the game.

WSU will take its annual spring break trip to Florida to compete in the RussMatt Invitational beginning on March 10 against Saint Joseph's.
