Softball Wins Twice on Opening Day of Spring Break Trip

Warriors have won three straight and six of seven.

CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Wayne State University softball squad (9-8 overall), after scoring just 29 runs in its first 15 games, tallied 10 runs to record a pair of victories on Saturday.  WSU defeated Southern Connecticut State (1-3), 4-2, in the opener before holding on to upend Concordia-St. Paul (6-10) by a 6-4 score in the nightcap.

In game one, the Warriors snapped a scoreless tie with a three-run third inning.  Junior center fielder Shannon Hilton (Gilford, Ont. / Bradford) and sophomore first baseman Allie Buchanan (Cambridge, Ont. / Galt C.I.) both walked to start the frame.  Sophomore right fielder Lyndsay Butler (Cambridge, Ont. / Centennial C.V.I.) followed with a bunt single to load the bases.  After a force out at home, senior second baseman Nikki Fulton (Stratford, Ont. / St. Michael Catholic S.S.) delivered a two-run sing to center with sophomore left fielder Devin Hentschel (Wyoming, Mich. / Rogers) coming around from first to score on an error.

WSU added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth as Buchanan had a leadoff single and advanced all the way to third on another Owl error.  Butler's single to right plated Buchanan.

SCS scored two unearned runs in the top of the sixth off WSU starter Briana Lee (Canton, Mich. / Salem), who improved to 5-2 with the victory.  Junior Mackenzie Boehler (Saginaw, Mich. / Swan Valley) notched her first collegiate save with a scoreless seventh inning.  Lee struck out seven and walked one while limiting the Owls to three hits in her six innings of work.  Boehler had one strikeout of the four batters she faced.

Kelsey Cockrill (1-2) went the distance in the circle for SCS and allowed four runs (two earned) on five hits with five strikeouts and three walks.

Butler had two hits, scored once and drove in a run in the triumph.

In the second game, Wayne State scored once in the second inning as senior catcher Emily Bryce (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester Adams) had a leadoff single, went to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior third baseman Jade McGarr (Guelph, Ont. / St. James Catholic), advanced to third on a ground out and scored on a single by freshman outfielder Kylee Barrett (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington).

The following inning, Butler had a one-out double, and scored on a two-out single by Fulton.

The Golden Bears pulled within a run in the third on a double, an error and a single.

WSU scored twice in the fifth as Butler had a leadoff single, went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Hentschel and scored on a single by Fulton.  Bryce followed with an RBI single plating Fulton, who advanced all the way to third on a misply in the CSP outfield.

Concordia-St. Paul made it 4-2 in the fifth on an error and an RBI triple.

Wayne State would score twice in the sixth which proved to be the margin of difference.  Buchanan had a one-out single and scored on Butler's fourth career home run.

The Golden Bears made it interesting in the seventh with two unearned runs and the winning run in the batter's box when pinch-hitter Linzy Heim lined out to end the game.

Butler evened her record at 4-4 with the win.  She struck out 13 and did not walk a batter while allowing four unearned runs on nine hits.

At the plate, Butler went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI, while Fulton, freshman Kristen Lucas (Newmarket, Ont. / Mulock S.S.) and Barrett each had two-hit games.

Wayne State will play Minnesota-Duluth and Pace on Sunday.
