Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader from Minnesota Duluth

Head coach Ryan Kelley collected his 200th career win with the game two victory.

AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- The Wayne State University baseball team (6-6) finished play at the RussMatt Invitational on Monday with a doubleheader against Minnesota Duluth (3-3). The Warrior cruised to a game one win, 15-3, and helped head coach Ryan Kelley notch his 200th career victory with a 10-1 victory in game two.

In the two games, the Warriors outscored the Bulldogs 25-4 and hit .393 with two home runs.

WSU finished its Florida trip with a 5-4 record and enter the conference portion of its schedule on a three-game winning streak.

Game One (W, 15-3)
WSU scored in all but two innings during the gane one victory over the fourth straight NSIC opponenet. The Warriors plated four runs on four hits in the top of the first inning.  Daniel Peake (Mississauga, Ont. / Lorne Park) highlighted the rally with a two-run single to right field to cap the scoring.

In the second inning, starting pitcher Kyle Zimmerman (Frankfort, Mich.) (1-1) helped his own cause with a three-run home run to center field to extend lead to 7-0.

UMD scored its first runs of the game in the second inning.   A two-run home run and a RBI double accounted for the inning's offense to trim WSU's lead to 7-2. 

Spencer Church (Windsor, Ont. / Holy Names) appeared as a pinch-hitter in the top of the fourth inning and drove in two runs with a single to left field.  The offense continued to come easy as the Green & Gold scored three more runs in the top of the sixth inning.  Aaron Loconsole (Macomb, Mich. / Marine City) and Griffin Harms (Bingham Farms, Mich. / Birmingham Groves) collected RBIs in the inning as WSU's lead grew to 12-3.

In the top of the seventh inning Nathan Manis (Port Huron, Mich. / Port Huron Northern) doubled home two runs before an RBI groundout from Harms put the final score at 15-3.

Zimmerman collected his first win of the season as he pitched five innings and allowed three earned runs while striking out six.  Tyler Tompson (Farmington, Mich.) tossed the final two innings and struck out three while not allowing a run.  Five Warriors posted multiple-hit games while Zimmerman finished 2-for-5 with four RBI and two runs scored.

Game Two (W, 10-1)
The Bulldogs struck first with an RBI single in the top of the second inning.

In the botto of the fourth inning, Zimmerman tied the game with a RBI single to center field.  The Warriors broke the game open with five runs on two hits and UMD error in the bottom of the fifth inning.  A bases-loaded walk issued to Zimmerman plated the inning's first run before Bradley Baldwin (Troy, Mich. / Bishop Foley Catholic) extended WSU's lead to 6-1.

The current GLIAC North Pitcher of the Week, Alex Kinch (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Pioneer) (2-0), kept UMD scoreless in the sixth inning before the Warriors added four more runs on an RBI single from Cole Clifton (Sterling Heights. Mich. / De La Salle) and a three-run home run off the bat of Harms.

Jeff Sorenson (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) tossed a scoreless seventh inning to secure the victory.  Kinch finished with six innings pitched with eight strikeouts.

Wayne State start GLIAC play at Walsh on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 1 PM.
