Softball Drops Two On Tuesday

Warriors outscored 7-1 in two games on Tuesday.

CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Wayne State University softball team (11-12 overall) lost both games on Tuesday as part of its Spring Break trip.  The Warriors lost 5-1 to Minot State in game one and were blanked by Augustana (S.D.), 2-0, in the nightcap.

In the opener, the Beavers scored three times in the top of the first off WSU starter Mackenzie Boehler (Saginaw, Mich. / Swan Valley) on a triple, a hit by pitch and a two-out three-run home run by Rachel Burdette.

MSU added an unearned run in the third, before the Warriors scored in the bottom of the fifth.  Freshman Kylee Barrett (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) had a pinch-hit single and advanced to second on a ground out, and to third on another ground out before scoring on a double by sophomore Lyndsay Butler (Cambridge, Ont. / Centennial C.V.I.).

Minot State tallied an unearned run in the seventh off freshman Haley Hurd (Atwater, Ohio / Waterloo) on a walk, an error and an RBI ground out.

Boehler (0-2) allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits in her six innings in the circle.  She struck out six and walked one.  Hurd did not allow a hit, but walked two.

Junior third baseman Jade McGarr (Guelph, Ont. / St. James Catholic) and Barrett each had two hits to account for four of WSU's seven hits in the contest.

In game two, Viking pitcher Jenelle Trautmann struck out nine and limited the Warriors to four singles in tossing the complete-game shutout.

Briana Lee (Canton, Mich. / Salem) suffered the loss to fall to 5-4.  She struck out five and walked one while allowing two runs (one earned) on eight hits.

Augustana took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second as the leadoff batter reached on a strikeout passed ball, moved to second on a single.  She advanced to third on another single and scored on the Vikings third hit of the frame.

Trautmann led off the fifth with a solo home run to complete the scoring.

Freshman Kristen Lucas (Newmarket, Ont. / Mulock S.S.) reached base twice on a single and a walk.
