CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Wayne State University softball team (16-13 overall) concluded its 2015 spring break trip with a pair of wins over Sioux Falls (14-6) on Saturday morning at the Softball National Training Center. WSU won its final four games in Florida and five of its last six.
The Warriors won the opener 3-1 and blanked the Cougars, 9-0, in five innings in the nightcap.
In game one, Wayne State's
Lyndsay Butler (Cambridge, Ont. / Centennial C.V.I.) and USF hurler Alyson Netty were locked in a pitchers duel through four innings with the Warriors having three hits and the Cougars one.
Butler had allowed just two baserunners, while retiring 14 of USF's first 16 batters.
In the bottom of the fifth, junior center fielder
Shannon Hilton (Gilford, Ont. / Bradford) reached on a two-out error, moved to second on a single by Butler, then stole third. After freshman outfielder
Kristen Lucas (Newmarket, Ont. / Mulock S.S.) walked on four pitches, senior second baseman
Nikki Fulton (Stratford, Ont. / St. Michael Catholic S.S.) was hit by a 1-2 offering from Netty forcing in the game's first run.
Sioux Falls tied the game in the sixth on three consecutive singles, but the Warriors responded in the bottom of the inning. Junior third baseman
Jade McGarr (Guelph, Ont. / St. James Catholic) smacked her first home run of the season to right center on the first pitch of the frame. Sophomore designated player
Emily Cava (Brampton, Ont. / Cardinal Leger S.S.) followed with a single and pinch-runner
Devin Hentschel (Wyoming, Mich. / Rogers) advanced all the way to third on a bunt single by freshman
Kylee Barrett (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington). Hentschel scored WSU's third run on a ground out by pinch-hitter
Shelby Spano (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Stevenson).
Butler (8-5) struck out nine and did not walk a batter while allowing one run on four hits. Netty surrendered three runs (two earned) on seven hits with one strikeout and two walks.
Senior catcher
Emily Bryce (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester Adams) was the lone Warrior with a multiple-hit game.
The Warriors scored twice in the top of the first of game two on four hits. Butler began the contest with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Lucas. Fulton's single plated Butler, while Fulton came around to score on a double by McGarr.
Wayne State added three runs the next inning on two hits. Lucas drove in the first run with an RBI single which was followed by a two-run home run from Fulton. It was Fulton's first round tripper since May 11, 2013, and her 22nd career home run.
Junior shortstop
Gabby Williams (South Lyon, Mich.) had a two-out single, then scored on a double by Hilton to make it 6-0 in the third. In the fourth, WSU scored three times on four hits. Lucas had a leadoff double, and Bryce drove her in with a one-out RBI single. McGarr walked, and with two outs, sophomore
Allie Buchanan (Cambridge, Ont. / Galt C.I.) and Williams had back-to-back RBI singles.
Lee was masterful retiring the first 13 Cougar batters including six on strikes. After a one-out single in the bottom of the fifth, Lee retired the next two batters on ground outs to end the game after five innings with WSU leading 9-0.
Four Warriors had two-hit affairs - Lucas, Fulton, Hentschel and Williams - as part of the 13-hit attack by Wayne State.
Wayne State will play its final 26 regular-season games against GLIAC competition starting with a twinbill at Lake Erie next Saturday (March 28).
