Baseball Drops Both Ends of Doubleheader at Hillsdale

The Warriors fell 13-4 in game one and 9-8 in game two.

HILLSDALE, Mich. -- The Wayne State University baseball team (7-12, 1-5 GLIAC) dropped both games of a doubleheader at Hillsdale (8-14, 3-3 GLIAC) on Sunday afternoon. The Chargers scored 10 runs in the first three innings on their way to a 13-4 win. The Warriors led 4-1 after three innings of game two but HIllsdale would come back and win 9-8 to complete the Sunday sweep.

Game One (L, 4-13)
A leadoff home run for Hillsdale in the bottom of the first inning and a sacrifice fly later in the frame put HC up 2-0.

The Warriors responded with two runs in the second inning on RBIs from Nathan Manis (Port Huron, Mich. / Port Huron Northern) and Sean Winkelseth (Ypsilanti, Mich.).

The home team's bats stayed hot - scoring four runs in each of the next two innings to extend the lead to 10-2.

WSU loaded the bases in the fifth inning but Hillsdale limited the damage with a 6-4-3 double play. Cole Clifton (Sterling Heights. Mich. / De La Salle) was able to score on the play to trim deficit to 10-3. A bases loaded walk to Dennis Olszewski (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Gabriel Richard) added a run for the Warriors in the top of the sixth inning.

However, the Chargers scored three runs in the sixth inning and kept WSU quiet in the seventh inning to take game one of the series, 13-4.

Brandyn Hall (Sylvania, Ohio / Northview) (0-2) pitched one 2/3 innings and allowed six earned runs on six hits, walked three and struck out two. Christian Bilkovic (West Bloomfield, Mich.), Chris Horvath (Lakeshore, Ont. / St. Anne Catholic) and Mike Murley (Royal Oak, Mich. / Bishop Foley Catholic) also appeared on the mound for WSU.

Game Two (L, 8-9)
Wayne State led 4-1 after three innings to begin game two. Back-to-back doubles from Bradley Baldwin (Troy, Mich. / Bishop Foley Catholic) and Kyle Zimmerman (Frankfort, Mich.) netted WSU's first run of the game. Olszewski led off the second inning with a solo home run to left field to give the Green & Gold a 2-0 advantage.

Hillsdale got on the board with an RBI single in the bottom of the second inning.

A sacrifice fly from Zimmerman and a Ryan Mergener (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Portage Central) RBI single extended the visitor's lead to 4-1.

WSU's lead was cut to two as Hillsdale scored a run in the fourth inning and the Chargers pulled within one with another RBI in the fifth inning. The game was tied at 4-4 after a sac fly RBI in the sixth inning.

Baldwin gave the Warriors a 5-4 lead with an RBI in the top of the seventh inning.

Starter Alex Kinch (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Pioneer) was replaced by Tyler Tompson (Farmington, Mich.) after a leadoff single in the bottom of the seventh inning. Hillsdale scored four runs on four hits to take an 8-5 lead.

An Olszewski groundout RBI and an Aaron Loconsole (Macomb, Mich. / Marine City) RBI single pulled the Warriors within one at 8-7. WSU tied the game in the ninth inning on a home run from Zimmerman.

A fielding error with one out in the bottom of ninth inning opened the door for the Chargers and an RBI single into center field sent the winning run home.

Jeff Sorenson (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) (1-2) pitched the final two 1/3 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits and struck out two. Kinch tossed six innings and allowed five earned runs on nine hits and struck out two.
