CALIFORNIA, Pa. -- The 27th-ranked Wayne State University women's tennis team (22-2) fell 5-4 at #12 California (Pa.) (3-2) on Sunday afternoon. The Warriors are currently ranked second in the Midwest region while the Vulcans are the top team in the Atlantic region.
WSU took two of the three doubles matches including an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles. The 18th-ranked senior duo of
Yahsha Moore (West Bloomfield, Mich.) and
Anne Li Briand (Repentigny, Que. ) faced the sixth-ranked doubles team of Kiefer Shaw and Jesse Burrell. Moore and Briand improve to 23-3 this season. In their careers, the two have won 93 doubles matches together, which is a program record.
Junior
Alex Poissant (Laval, Que.) and freshman
Liz de Souza Ghellere (Ararangua, Brazil) fell at No. 2 doubles 8-1 while sophomores
Ashley Walker (Canton, Mich. / Salem) and
Andreea Mitrache (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Warren Cousino) won 8-1 at No. 3 doubles.
Moore, ranked #49 in the nation, dropped a thriller at No. 1 singles 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (8-6). Moore's opponent, Shaw, is ranked 23rd in Division II.
Mitrache fell to 35th-ranked Ramona Czakon at No. 2 singles 6-3, 6-0. Poissant lost the third flight of singles 6-2, 3-6, 5-4 while Briand earned her 95th career singles win at No. 4 singles, 2-6, 6-1, 6-4.
Junior
Julia Kamenko (Toronto, Ont.) won at the fifth flight of singles 6-3, 7-5 and sophomore
Lauren Hughes (Detroit, Mich. / Southfield) fell at No. 6 singles 6-4, 6-3.
Wayne State will host Indiana (Pa.) on Friday, April 3 at noon.
