ALLENDALE, Mich. -- The Wayne State University softball team (18-15 overall, 2-2 GLIAC) lost both ends of a doubleheader, 3-2 and 4-2, at Grand Valley State (18-6 overall, 4-1 GLIAC) Tuesday afternoon.
GVSU scored two runs in the bottom of the third in game one on three hits and two WSU miscues.
The Warriors were able to get one run back in the top of the fourth as starting pitcher
Lyndsay Butler (Cambridge, Ont. / Centennial C.V.I.) reached on an error and freshman outfielder
Kristen Lucas (Newmarket, Ont. / Mulock S.S.) followed with a base hit. After a sacrifice bunt by senior second baseman
Nikki Fulton (Stratford, Ont. / St. Michael Catholic S.S.), Butler scored on a wild pitch.
The Lakers answered with an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth on a single, a ground out and a Wayne State throwing error.
WSU had a chance to pull even in the top of the fifth as freshman
Kylee Barrett (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) had a leadoff single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore
Devin Hentschel (Wyoming, Mich. / Rogers). Pinch-hitter
Briana Lee (Canton, Mich. / Salem) drove the ball to deep center field but a catch against the fence prevented an extra-base hit. Junior
Shelby Spano (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Stevenson) plated Barrett with an RBI single. Butler followed with a double, but Lucas was retired to end the frame.
Butler suffered the loss to fall to 9-6. She struck out 10 and walked one while allowing six hits and three runs (two earned). Five different Warriors had hits in the opener.
The Lakers snapped a scoreless tie in the top of the third of game two as J Lenza smacked a one-out home run to left field on a 3-1 offering from Lee (7-6).
GVSU added three runs in the top of the fourth on a trio of hits and a pair of Warrior errors. After the first batter reached on a Wayne State throwing error, three of the next four Laker hitters singled scoring two runs before another WSU throwing error allowed another runner to cross home plate.
The Warriors had the bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the fourth but were unable to tally their first run because of a force out and a line out.
Wayne State scored twice in the bottom of the seventh as Lee reached on an error.Â
Emily Cava (Brampton, Ont. / Cardinal Leger S.S.) had a two-out single, with both Lee and Cava scoring on a throwing error.
Lee allowed four runs (two earned) with eight strikeouts to four walks. Three different players accounted for Wayne State's three hits in the contest.
The Warriors will play their first home game this Friday as the Findlay Oilers come to Motown for a 3:30 p.m. doubleheader.
