DAHLONEGA, Ga. -- The Wayne State University softball team (6-7 overall) was able to extend its winning streak to three games with a pair of victories during the first day of the 2015 Captain D's Surf and Turf Classic hosted by the University of North Georgia.
The Warriors defeated in-region foe McKendree (2-4 overall) 2-0 in the game three on Saturday, then edged Lincoln Memorial (8-8 overall) by a 1-0 score in the final game of the day.
In WSU's first game, redshirt junior
Shelby Spano (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Stevenson) smacked a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth for her second career round tripper and first since April 1, 2012, against Ohio Dominican in the second game of a GLIAC twinbill. Senior second baseman
Nikki Fulton (Stratford, Ont. / St. Michael Catholic S.S.) had singled immediately before Spano's blast.
Wayne State sophomore pitcher
Lyndsay Butler (Cambridge, Ont. / Centennial C.V.I.) scattered two Bearcat singles. She struck out eight and did not walk a batter in improving to 2-4 and recording her first shutout of the season.
Freshman
Kristen Lucas (Newmarket, Ont. / Mulock Secondary School) drilled a double for WSU's only other extra-base hit in the contest.
Susan Goetze (0-2) went the distance in the circle for MU striking out three and walking one, while allowing two earned runs.
In the nightcap, Spano's two-out bases loaded infield single in the top of the first plated Lucas with what proved to be the only run of the game. Butler led the Warrior seven hit attack with a pair of singles, while Fulton reached twice on a single and a walk.
Senior
Briana Lee (Canton, Mich. / Salem) tossed her second shutout of the campaign to improve to 4-2. She struck out three and did not walk a batter.
Brianna Taylor (4-4) pitched the entire game for the Railsplitters striking out two and walking one. Taylor limited the Warriors to seven singles, but four of them came in the top of the first.
Wayne State will play two games on Sunday with a 9 a.m. first pitch against former GLIAC member Mercyhurst, followed by an 11 a.m. contest versus host North Georgia.
