Softball Wins Twice on Senior Day; Extends Winning Streak To 13 Games

Butler tosses one-hit shutout in opener; Warriors pound out 19 hits in nightcap.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University softball team (31-15 overall, 15-2 GLIAC) won twice on Senior Day Saturday afternoon at the WSU Softball Stadium to extend its winning streak to 13 games.  The Warriors blanked visiting Lake Superior State University (11-22 overall, 4-15 GLIAC) 8-0 in the opener as Lyndsay Butler (Cambridge, Ont. / Centennial C.V.I.) tossed a one-hit shutout.  Wayne State pounded out 19 hits including four each by Kristen Lucas (Newmarket, Ont. / Mulock S.S.) and Jade McGarr (Guelph, Ont. / St. James Catholic) in a 12-3 Warrior triumph in the nightcap.

WSU scored a single run in the each of the first three innings, tallied two runs in the fourth and ended game one with a three-run walk-off home run by senior second baseman Nikki Fulton (Stratford, Ont. / St. Michael Catholic S.S.) in the bottom of the fifth.

Butler (16-6) won her seventh consecutive decision, fifth by shutout, by allowing just a leadoff single in the second to Carly Banchiu.  She struck out five and did not walk a batter.

LSSU did have two runners in the first on a pair of Warrior miscues.  Butler retired 11 straight Laker batters until Alyssa Avila reached on a dropped fly ball with two outs in the fifth but was tagged out at second base.

McGarr had a two-out RBI single in the first scoring Fulton who had walked, while junior center fielder Shannon Hilton (Gilford, Ont. / Bradford), who led off the second with a single, later scored on a single by Butler.  McGarr had a leadoff bunt single in the third, stole second, advanced to third on a ground out and scored on a base hit by Hilton.

In the fourth, Butler had a leadoff triple to right center and scored on a one-out double by Fulton as the Laker left fielder almost made a diving catch in left center.  With two outs, freshman Kylee Barrett (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) ripped an RBI single off the LSSU third baseman into left field.

Hilton led off the fifth with a four-pitch walk.  After back-to-back fielder choices, Lucas hit a solid single to center prior to Fulton smashing a 2-0 offering over the left field fence for her 24th career home run.

Riley Durbano (3-13) started in the circle for LSSU and was replaced by Alyssa Boucher in the fourth.  Durbano allowed five earned runs on 10 hits in 3.1 innings with one strikeout and two walks.  Boucher recorded four hits but yielded three earned runs on three hits with two walks.

WSU erupted for 19 hits in the nightcap, most by a Warrior team in three years, with nine different players having hits and eight recording at least one RBI.

Wayne State snapped a scoreless tie in the top of the second with a pair of runs.  Starting pitcher Briana Lee (Canton, Mich. / Salem) had an RBI ground out soring McGarr, while sophomore Allie Buchanan (Cambridge, Ont. / Galt C.I.) contributed an RBI single plating Barrett.

The Lakers tied the contest with two runs on four hits in the bottom of the frame.

WSU regained the lead in the third as Lucas had a leadoff double and scored on a two-bagger by McGarr.  Barrett followed with an RBI single to make it 4-2.

LSSU pulled within a run (4-3) in the bottom of the frame on an unearned run.

The Warriors increased their advantage in the fourth as junior shortstop Gabby Williams (South Lyon, Mich.) led off the inning with a single, then scored on a one-out double by Butler.  Lucas laced a single through the right side plating Butler and Fulton followed with a single through the left side.  With two outs, McGarr wallopped a pitch into left center field that was nearly caught by the Laker left fielder but the ball rolled behind her after she hit the ground allowing Lucas to score.

Wayne State added three runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh to complete the scoring.

Lee (13-6) allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits in five innings on the mound.  Junior Mackenzie Boehler (Saginaw, Mich. / Swan Valley) retired all six batters she faced over the final two innings, including three on strikes.

Brandi Anderson (6-8) went the distance in the circle for LSSU.  She surrendered 12 runs (10 earned) on 19 hits with two strikeouts and no walks.

McGarr went 4-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI, while Lucas had a 4-for-5 contest with a team-best three runs scored.  Barrett and Fulton each contributed three hits as WSU improved to 8-0 at home this season.

The Warriors will entertain Northwood on Sunday for a conference twinbill starting at noon.  Follow live stats or a pay-per-view video webcast on both games at wsuathletics.com.
