Baseball Punches Ticket to GLIAC Tournament

Two solid outings from starting pitchers aid in sweep of Findlay on Tuesday.

FINDLAY, Ohio -- The Wayne State University baseball team (21-20-1, 15-12-1 GLIAC) played two divisional make-up games from this past weekend at Findlay (12-32, 7-21 GLIAC) on Tuesday. The games loomed large in the GLIAC standings as WSU looked to stay in second place in the North Division. The Warriors drew nine walks against five Findlay pitchers to post a 7-1 victory in game one and used a three-run third inning in game two to hold on for a 3-2 victory.

With the game one win, WSU secured a berth in its eighth straight GLIAC Tournament and locked up the second seed in the North Division. The top two teams from each division make the GLIAC Tournament plus the next two teams with the best overall conference records.

Game One (W, 5-0)
After two walks and a single from Bradley Baldwin (Troy, Mich. / Bishop Foley Catholic), a passed ball allowed Cole Clifton (Sterling Heights. Mich. / De La Salle) to score, giving WSU the early 1-0 lead. Back-to-back bases-loaded walks to Daniel Peake (Mississauga, Ont. / Lorne Park) and Aaron Loconsole (Macomb, Mich. / Marine City) extended WSU's lead to 3-0 and knocked Findlay's starter out of the game after recording just one out. The Green & Gold's patient approach netted five walks in the first seven batters. Griffin Harms (Bingham Farms, Mich. / Birmingham Groves) kept the line moving with a two-run single into center field.

Starter Chris Horvath (Lakeshore, Ont. / St. Anne Catholic) (3-1) matched a career high with his sixth strikeout in the bottom of the fourth inning but a single and two errors led to an unearned run for the Oilers.

A double from Harms to right center in the top of the fifth inning drove home his third and fourth runs of the game and put WSU on top 7-1.

Horvath set Findlay down in order in the bottom of the fifth on just 11 pitches and struck two more batters in the bottom of the sixth inning. The 6-4 right-hander collected his first career complete game and ended the contest with his career-high ninth strikeout. He allowed one unearned run on three hits and walked just one.

The 7-8-9 hitters in the Warriors' lineup (Loconsole, Sean Winkelseth, Harms) combined to go 6-for-8 with five RBI and two runs scored.

Game Two (W, 3-2)
With one out in the top of the third inning, Dennis Olszewski (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Gabriel Richard) tripled to left center and then scored on a passed ball. After a single from Nate Manis (Port Huron, Mich. / Port Huron Northern), Baldwin gave the Warriors a 3-0 advantage with a two-run single into left field.

Starter Alex Kinch (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Pioneer) (4-4) was impressive as he struck out four batters and allowed just one hit through four innings.

The Oilers got on the board with a run on two hits in the bottom of the sixth inning.

JT Conti (Trenton, Mich.) replaced Kinch on the mound to begin the eighth inning but allowed the two batters he faced to reach before head coach Ryan Kelley turned to his closer, Jeff Sorenson (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson). Sorenson issued a walk to load the bases before an RBI single trimmed WSU's lead to 3-2. A 3-2-3 ground ball double play and a strikeout kept WSU on top 3-2.

Sorenson danced around a two-out single to record his seventh save of the season. Kinch pitched seven innings and struck out eight while allowing one earned run on four hits.

WSU will conclude the regular season with a four-game series at Ashland beginning on Saturday at 1 PM.
