ALLENDALE, Mich. -- The Wayne State University volleyball team (3-6, 0-1 GLIAC) began league play on Friday night at #18 Grand Valley State (5-4, 1-0 GLIAC). The Warriors were swept by the Lakers in three sets by set scores of 25-23, 25-12 and 25-21.
HOW IT HAPPENEDIn a tightly contested opening set, WSU led 6-5 after a kill from
Emily Norscia (Livonia, Mich. / Livonia Churchill) and a GVSU ball-handling error. Following back-to-back errors by the Lakers,
Hannah Moore (Louisville, Ky. / Assumption) gave the Warriors a 9-7 lead with a kill. GVSU rallied back to take a 12-11 lead but a 5-0 run by the Green & Gold forced a home timeout with WSU holding onto a 16-12 advantage. The Warriors won the race to 20 with a
Hailey Richardson (New Boston, Mich. / Huron) service ace. However, GVSU ended the set on an 11-3 run to win 25-23.
Grand Valley State led the second set 8-4 before WSU head coach
Tim Koth took a timeout.
Christa Raicevich (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich. / Grosse Pointe North) delivered a service ace to pull the Warriors within five at 13-8. Once again, the Lakers were able to finish a set with a flurry. GVSU took a 2-0 match lead with a 25-12 game two win, ending the set on a 12-3 run.
Following a kill from
Grace Frazee (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian) WSU led the third set 4-2. The Lakers went on a 6-0 run to take an 8-4 lead and force an early Warrior timeout. Back-to-back home attack errors brought WSU within three at 12-9 and a block from Moore and Mikaya Shell (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) later in the set cut the deficit to two (13-11). Another Laker attack error tied the set at 14-14 before the Lakers took four of the next five points. WSU would never get closer than two the rest of the way and GVSU completed the sweep with a 25-21 victory.
INDIVIDUAL NOTES- Norscia led WSU with seven kills on 19 swings.
- Moore had a team-high 24 attacks.
