UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. -- The Wayne State University volleyball team (5-9, 1-4 GLIAC) finished its three-match road trip at Saginaw Valley State (11-1, 3-2 GLIAC) on Tuesday night. The Warriors were swept 3-0 by set scores of 25-14, 25-22 and 25-19.
HOW IT HAPPENED- After early kills from
Grace Frazee (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian) and
Hannah Moore (Louisville, Ky. / Assumption) the Warriors led 3-1 in the first set. However, SVSU went on an 8-2 run to take a 9-4 lead. WSU responded with a 4-0 run capped by a point from
Emily Norscia (Livonia, Mich. / Livonia Churchill) to cut the Cardinals' lead to one point, 9-8. The Cards pulled away with a 9-1 run, extending their lead to 17-9. SVSU cruised to a 25-14 victory and 1-0 match lead.
- Playing in front of 765 fans in their home opener, SVSU continued its solid play and led 11-5 to begin the second set. A Frazee kill later in the set trimmed the Cards' advantage to 14-13. The deficit was cut to a point once again at 18-17 after a kill from Moore. A SVSU attack error near the end of the set made it 24-22 in favor of the Cardinals and SVSU was able to take a commanding 2-0 lead with a 25-22 triumph.
- Trailing 8-5, the Warriors rallied to go on a 4-0 run, which included an ace from
Hailey Richardson (New Boston, Mich. / Huron), to take their first lead of the set at 9-8. Moore kept the Green & Gold on top, 12-11, with a kill assisted by Brittany Guldan (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Walled Lake Central). The Cards answered with a 5-0 run to take a 16-12 lead and force WSU to use both of its timeouts during the surge. The Warriors were unable to get any closer than two points the rest of the way as SVSU completed the sweep with a 25-19 victory.
LEADING THE WARRIORS- Norscia led WSU with nine kills on 25 swings. Moore finished with eight kills on 29 swings.
- Guldan dished out 17 assists while
Ellie Rodriguez (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Catholic Central) and Richardson both collected nine digs.
LEADING THE CARDINALS- Kaylee Schmitt led SVSU with 13 kills while Tamara Heller finished with 10 kills.
- Kelly Vellucci tallied 34 assists and Brooke Tiller dug 19 balls.
