DETROIT –The Wayne State University women's tennis squad defeated conference opponent Walsh, 9-0, Sunday afternoon. The Warriors (2-0, 2-0 GLIAC) recorded back-to-back shutouts for the first time during the fall season since 2009 where WSU defeated Tiffin and Valparaiso. WSU has won 25 consecutive regular-season GLIAC matches since a 6-3 setback to Northwood on Sept. 11, 2013, and 39 of the last 40 league matches.
DOUBLES • Senior
Alex Poissant (Laval, Que. / Vanier Prep) and junior
Andreea Mitrache (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Warren Cousino) led WSU in doubles play with an 8-3 victory at the second flight.
• Juniors
Lauren Hughes (Detroit, Mich. / Southfield) and
Ashley Walker (Canton, Mich. / Salem) beat the Cavaliers' Gabriela Laguna-Leon and Arina Kravitz 8-4 in a No. 3 doubles match.
• Freshmen
Liv Peisachovitz (Vaughan, Ont. / Northview Heights S.S.) and
Dasha Kuznetsova (Moscow, Russia / Moscow School 45) recorded an 8-6 win over Walsh's Sofya Logonuva and Daria Bondareva in the top doubles spot.
SINGLES• Poissant came back from behind to seal a victory in a third set super tiebreaker, 10-5. The co-captain lost the first set, 6-7 (3-7) and won the second set in a tiebreaker, 7-6.
• Mitrache was also victorious defeating Bondareva, 6-1, 6-0 at the top singles flight.
• Sophomore
Liz Ghellere (Ararangua, Brazil / Unificado) posted a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles, while Peisachovitz recorded a straight-set win, 6-1, 6-0 at the third singles spot.
• Kuznetsova beat the Cavaliers' Bergamaschi, 6-2, 6-4 at No. 4 singles and senior co-captain
Julia Kamenko (Toronto, Ont. / Vaughan S.S.) returned from injury to compete in the fifth singles flight. She won in two sets, 7-5, 6-0, respectively.
UP NEXT• The Warriors (2-0, 2-0 GLIAC) will play league opponent Findlay next Saturday at 10 a.m. at the WSU Tennis Courts. WSU defeated the Oilers 8-1 sweeping the singles flights last season.
