Softball Wins Twice At Lewis Dome Invitational

Warriors improve to 3-1 on the young season.

ROSEMONT, Ill. -- The Wayne State University softball squad (3-1 overall) won both of its games on Saturday at the Lewis Dome Invitational being held at the Dome at the Ballpark.  The Warriors pounded out 11 hits in a 10-2 victory over Lindenwood (2-11), then blanked tournament host Lewis 2-0 (2-2) in Saturday's nightcap.

GAME ONE RECAP

WSU began the contest with a three-run top of the first.  Redshirt junior Lyndsay Butler (Cambridge, Ont. / Centennial C.V.I.) led off the game with a walk and advanced to second as junior Allie Buchanan (Cambridge, Ont. / Galt C.I.) laced a single through the left side.  Senior Jade McGarr (Guelph, Ont. / St. James Catholic) had an infield hit to load the bases, and senior Shelby Spano (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Stevenson) hit into a fielder's choice scoring Butler.  Freshman Hannah McClounie (Essex, Ont. / St. Anne Catholic) plated Buchanan with a sacrifice fly, while sophmore Shelby Fridline (Almont, Mich. / SC4) had a single up the middle scoring McGarr.

Sophomore Hailey Lazarek (Allen Park, Mich.) had a one-out single in the fourth, and senior Gabby Williams (South Lyon, Mich.) followed with a base hit up the middle.  Butler's single through the left side scored Lazarek, with Williams coming across the plate on a single up the middle by Buchanan.  A groundout by Spano made it 6-0.

The Lions scored both of their runs in the bottom of the sixth, but the Warriors answered with four runs in the top of the seventh.  McClounie drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on a single by sophomore Kylee Barrett (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington).  A fielder's choice left runners at the corners, with Lazarek's fielder's choice scoring McClounie.  Another fielder's choice by freshman Megan Guitar (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) scored classmate Ashley Messina (Troy, Mich.).  A single by senior Shannon Hilton (Gilford, Ont. / Bradford) loaded the bases before freshman Jamie MacNeil (Brampton, Ont. / St. Thomas Aquinas S.S.) delivered a two-run single.

IN THE CIRCLE

Senior Mackenzie Boehler (Saginaw, Mich. / Swan Valley) went the distance to improve to 1-1 on the young season.  She struck out three and did not walk a batter, while allowing two runs on four hits with three of the singles coming in the sixth.  Boehler retired 15 of the first 16 Lion hitters.

Morgan Colvis (1-4) pitched the entire game for Lindenwood allowing 10 earned runs on 11 hits with four strikeouts to three walks.

LEADING THE WARRIORS

Buchanan and McGarr each went 2-for-4 as nine different Warriors had hits in the game.  Butler scored twice.

LEADING THE OPPOSITION

GAME TWO RECAP

The Warriors snapped a scoreless draw with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third.  Hilton began the frame with a double to left center and was sacrificed to third by Butler.  Buchanan's single through the left side plated Hilton with the game's first run.  McGarr advanced Buchanan into scoring position with a bunt single and with two outs a throwing error by the Flyer hurler allowed Buchanan to score from second.

IN THE CIRCLE

Butler (2-0) only faced 25 Lewis hitters retiring seven on strikes with no walks.  She allowed three hits and induced 11 groundouts.  The Flyers only had one runner reach second base safely (with one out in the third) but back-to-back groundouts ended the inning.

Paige fossey (0-1) went the distance for Lewis.  She struck out one and walked one, while allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits in six innings of work.
