Softball Earns Two Wins On Monday, 3-0 and 4-2

The Warriors posted 19 hits on Monday.

CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Wayne State University softball team (15-2 overall) collected two wins on the third day of its Spring Break trip on Monday in Clermont, Fla.  The Warriors blanked No. 15 Caldwell, 3-0, and topped Minnesota State-Moorhead, 4-2, to extend their winning streak to 11 games. 

GAME ONE RECAP
Well played defense kept both teams scoreless until the Warriors took a 2-0 lead in the third inning as sophomore Hailey Lazarek (Allen Park, Mich.) sparked the offense with a single. Junior Lyndsay Butler (Cambridge, Ont. / Centennial C.V.I.) got on base with a single to the shortstop.  Lazarek and Butler both on a sacrifice bunt from junior Allie Buchanan (Cambridge, Ont. / Galt C.I.) then scored off a single up the middle by senior Jade McGarr (Guelph, Ont. / St. James Catholic).

Wayne State added an insurance run when Lazarek singled and scored on a Buchanan hit to center field in the fifth inning.  The Warriors held Caldwell to two hits in the sixth and seventh inning to earn the victory. 

IN THE CIRCLE 
Butler notched the win (10-1) giving up four hits while striking out five batters to one walk. 

Amber Padilla took the loss for the Cougars and allowed three earned runs while giving up six hits in 4.2 innings.  She struck out four batters to zero walks.  Sydney Pronto entered the circle in the fifth and struck out two batters.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Lazarek led the team with two hits and scored two runs, while McGarr recorded two RBI. 

LEADING THE OPPOSITION
Meghan Fryday, Amy Hickman, Brielle Reighn and Kiahna Silva all had one hit for Caldwell.

GAME TWO RECAP
WSU scored three runs early in the second inning against Minnesota State-Moorhead off four straight hits. Sophomore Shelby Fridline (Almont, Mich.) started the hitting spree with a double into left field.  She scored on a Butler single up the middle. Buchanan doubled into center field to drive in Butler, before McGarr smacked a double past the shortstop to score Buchanan. 

Wayne State's defense held the Dragons to two hits in the first three innings with senior Mackenzie Boehler (Saginaw, Mich. / Swan Valley) striking out five of the 15 batters. 

Butler posted a lead-off single in the fourth inning.  She advanced to second on Buchanan's sacrifice bunt and later scored off a McGarr single up the middle to extend the lead to 4-0. 

Minnesota State-Moorhead tried to rally in the sixth inning by scoring two runs.  Jill Fox earned a walk and later scored on a Kristen Nordby home run over center field.  

Boehler was relieved by Butler in the circle in the seventh inning as Butler ended the contest with three strikeouts. 

IN THE CIRCLE 
Boehler earned the win to improve to 4-1 and gave up two earned runs in six innings.  She surrendered six hits and struck out seven batters to one walk. 

Morgan Nybo pitched a complete game for the Dragons surrendering all four runs.  She allowed 13 hits and struck out three batters to three walks. 

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Butler led the team with four hits, while McGarr had three hits, including a double. 

LEADING THE OPPOSITION 
Nordby and Taylor Roddie each had two hits for Minnesota State-Moorhead.

Wayne State will travel to Melbourne, Fla. to take on No. 27 Florida Tech (11 a.m.) and No. 20 Southern New Hampshire (1:15 p.m.).
