Softball Splits On Friday In Florida

The Warriors posted a 6-1 win over Franklin Pierce.

CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Wayne State University softball team (19-4 overall) split on seventh day of the Warriors' Spring Break Trip on Friday afternoon at Hancock Park in Clermont, Fla.  WSU topped Franklin Piece (4-8 overall) 6-1, but fell to Merrimack (3-8 overall), 1-0. 
GAME ONE RECAP
The Warriors took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning as sophomore Hailey Lazarek (Allen Park, Mich.) singled to third base.  Senior Lyndsay Butler (Cambridge, Ont. / Centennial C.V.I.) laced a homerun into right center to drive in Lazarek.
Ashley Deyo blasted a homer to center field to decrease Wayne State's lead to one (2-1) after the third inning.
Kristen Lucas (Newmarket, Ont. / Mulock S.S.) hit a leadoff single to start the fourth inning and advanced to second from a sacrifice bunt from senior Shelby Spano (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Stevenson). An RBI single to center field from freshman Megan Guitar (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) plated Lucas for a 3-1 lead.
In the next frame, WSU added two insurance runs as Butler led off with a single, advanced to second on a single by senior Jade McGarr (Guelph, Ont. / St. James Catholic) and scored on a hit through the left side from Lucas. McGarr was plated on a ground out from Spano.
Junior Allie Buchanan (Cambridge, Ont. / Galt C.I.) doubles to left field to start the seventh inning and scored the Warriors' final run on a single from Lucas.  Wayne State sealed the victory with nine straight outs in the last three innings.
IN THE CIRCLE
Butler (12-2) allowed three hits, while striking out six batters to zero walks.  She induced eight ground outs and six fly outs.
Sabrina LoMonaco (0-4) pitched four innings for Franklin Pierce and gave up three runs with four hits.  She struck out one batter and walked two.  Abbie Paquette came into the circle as relief for three innings as she allowed six hits and three runs.  She struck out two batters to zero walks.
LEADING THE WARRIORS
Lucas led the Warriors with three hits and two RBI.
LEADING THE OPPOSITION
Deyo, Sorenson and Wood all had one hit for the Ravens

GAME TWO RECAP
Merrimack and Wayne State finished the first two and a half innings scoreless until Brittany Razo reached first base on a hit by pitch. She advanced to second base off a Samantha Waskowitz single through the left side and scored on an Alyssa Williamson single.  Merrimack took the 1-0 lead after the third frame.
IN THE CIRCLE
Senior Mackenzie Boehler (Saginaw, Mich. / Swan Valley) pitched the complete game to give up one run and surrender five hits.  She struck out 11 batters and walked two.
For Merrimack, Alexis Perry earned the win only allowing three hits, while striking out two batters and walked two.
LEADING THE WARRIORS
Butler, Buchanan and Guitar each had one hit.
LEADING THE OPPOSITION
Haley Currie, Breanna Dupuis, Kaleigh Finigan, Waskowitz and Williamson each had one hit.

Wayne State will conclude its Spring Break trip with a doubleheader against Saint Michael's on Saturday. The first game is slated for 9 a.m. with the second contest set for 11 a.m.
