AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- After a 1-5 start, the Wayne State University baseball team (7-7) found its footing in Florida, going 6-2 during the spring break schedule. The Warriors defeated Saint Michael's (0-3) on Saturday 4-1 to complete the three-game sweep of the Purple Knights and extended its winning streak to four games. The game was called due to rain after the top of the eighth inning.
HOW IT HAPPENED- SMC struck first with a run on two hits in the bottom of the first inning.
Chris Horvath (Lakeshore, Ont.) (1-3) was able to strand two runners in the bottom of the second inning and provided momentum for WSU's offense. Three hits and a SMC error helped the Warriors score three runs in the top of the third inning.
Devin Rose (Farmington Hills, Mich. / Orchard Lake St. Mary's) and
Griffin Harms (Bingham Farms, Mich. / Birmingham Groves) collected RBI in the frame.
- After singles by
Aaron Loconsole (Macomb, Mich. / Marine City) and
Dennis Olszewski (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Gabriel Richard), a SMC error loaded the bases in the top of the fourth inning.
Josh Arndt (Sterling Heights. Mich. / Oxford) was plunked to give WSU a 4-1 advantage. The Green & Gold nearly added another run on a sacrifice fly but Olszewski was thrown out at the plate. Horvath retired the side in order in the fourth and fifth innings.

Tyler Waldrop (Grand Ledge, Mich.) replaced Horvath in the seventh inning and faced the minimum thanks to a 1-6-3 double play. Rose reached on a fielder's choice in the top of the eighth inning and stole two bases but was unable to add to WSU's lead. The game was declared final after the top of the eighth due to heavy rain.
LEADING THE WARRIORS- Loconsole and Olszewski both collected two-hit games.
ON THE MOUND- Horvath was sharp in his six innings of work, striking out eight batters. He allowed one earned run on four hits and a walk.
- Waldrop notched his first collegiate save by tossing a perfect inning in the seventh.
UP NEXT- Wayne State will open up its home and GLIAC schedule on Friday against Hillsdale. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
