Baseball Splits Series with Hillsdale

Wayne State won game two on Saturday 15-6.

DETROIT -- After splitting Friday's league-opening doubleheader, the Wayne State University baseball team (9-9, 2-2 GLIAC) did the same thing on Saturday against Hillsdale (14-8, 2-2 GLIAC).  The Chargers captured game one 20-10 before the Warriors used a seven-run fifth inning to take game two 15-6.

GAME ONE vs. HILLSDALE (L, 10-20)
HOW IT HAPPENED

- Hillsdale struck first with three runs on four hits in the top of the first inning.  Starter Chris Horvath (Lakeshore, Ont.) was able to limit the damage to those three runs and strand three base runners.  The Chargers put three more runners on in the second inning but were unable to add to their lead.  After a leadoff double by JT Conti (Trenton, Mich.), Aaron Loconsole (Macomb, Mich. / Marine City) doubled to left field to plate WSU's first run in the bottom of the second inning.

- Two hits and an error led to an HC run in the top of the fourth inning.  Ryan Mergener (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Portage Central) doubled to begin the bottom of the fourth inning before Loconsole and Jared Tobey (St. Clair, Mich.) followed with singles to cut the deficit to 4-2.  Loconsole would score as Tobey stole second base.  A bases-loaded walk to Brad Baldwin (Troy, Mich. / Bishop Foley Catholic) tied the game at 4-4.

- Hillsdale took a 9-4 lead with five runs on three hits and an error in the top of the fifth inning.  The Chargers added a run in the sixth to extend the lead to 10-4.  Back-to-back doubles from Baldwin and Griffin Harms (Bingham Farms, Mich. / Birmingham Groves) produced WSU's fifth and six runs.  The game went off the rails in the top of the seventh inning when HC scored 10 runs on four hits and two WSU errors.

- Zach Girard (Sleepy Hollow, Ill. / Dundee Crown) sent an RBI single up the middle in the bottom of the seventh inning.  Daniel Peake (Mississauga, Ont. ) trimmed the visitors' lead to 20-10 with a pinch-hit three run blast to right field.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
- Loconsole went 3-for-4 with and RBI and two runs scored.
- Peake matched the game-high for RBI with three with his pinch-hit home run.

ON THE MOUND
- Horvath lasted three 2/3 innings and allowed three earned runs on 10 hits and three walks.
- Nick Cowen (Tecumseh, Mich.) (0-1) gave the deciding run in his 1/3 of an inning.

- Brandyn Hall (Sylvania, Ohio / Northview) made his first appearance of the season and allowed an unearned run in 2/3 of an inning.

GAME TWO vs. HILLSDALE (W, 15-6)
HOW IT HAPPENED

- Tyler Waldrop (Grand Ledge, Mich.) set down the Chargers in order in the top of first inning.  However, Hillsdale touched Waldrop up for three runs on three hits in the top of the second inning.  Harms singled through the left side to plate Loconsole for WSU's first run of the contest.

- Mergener drew a walk to begin the bottom of the fourth inning and came around to score on a wild pitch to trim the deficit to one, 3-2.  Hillsdale scored two runs on two hits and another WSU error in the top of the fifth inning, taking a 5-2 lead.  Justin Kelly (Wheaton, Ill. / Wheaton Warrenville South) began the comeback with a two-run double into left center in the bottom of the fifth.  Conti gave the Green & Gold the lead with a three-run home run to right field (his first collegiate home run).  RBI singles from Tobey and Cole Clifton (Sterling Heights. Mich. / De La Salle) extended WSU's lead to 9-5.

- HC scored a run in the top of the seventh inning with an RBI single.  The Warriors responded with four runs on four hits and a HC error in bottom of the seventh inning to take a 13-6 lead.  WSU added two more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to push the final score to 15-6.
