Offense Leads Baseball to Tuesday Split

Wayne State won game two 13-1 against St. Joseph's.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University baseball team (10-10) captured game two against St. Joseph's (12-13) to secure a Tuesday split.  The Pumas used a three-run sixth inning to win game one, while the Warriors scored six runs in the first inning of game two to set the tone and win 13-1.

GAME ONE vs. ST. JOSEPH'S (L, 1-3)
HOW IT HAPPENED

- It looked like the Warriors would get on the board first in the bottom of the first inning after a single and a fielding error put runners at first and second with one out.  However, a fielder's choice and a fly out ended the the threat.  Addison Pawelek (Shelby Twp., Mich. / De La Salle) (1-1) kept SJC quiet in the third, fourth and fifth innings.

- Jared Tobey (St. Clair, Mich.) led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Sean Winkelseth (Ypsilanti, Mich.).  Once again, the timely hit proved to be elusive for the Warriors as the next two hitters were retired to keep the game tied at 0-0.  The Pumas broke the scoreless tie with a leadoff home run to begin the top of the sixth inning.  Following a fielding error, another home run gave SJC a 3-0 advantage.

- Griffin Harms (Bingham Farms, Mich. / Birmingham Groves) doubled with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning but was thrown out at home on a Ryan Mergener (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Portage Central) single through the left side.  Aaron Loconsole (Macomb, Mich. / Marine City) put WSU on the board with an RBI single to plate Tobey but that would be the final offense of the day for the Green & Gold.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
- Tobey posted a 3-for-3 day with a run scored.

ON THE MOUND
- Pawelek pitched five and 1/3 innings and struck out five, while allowing two earned runs on six hits.
- Taylor Horn (Leo, Ind.) tossed the final inning and 2/3 and did not allow a run.

GAME TWO vs. ST. JOSEPH'S (W, 13-1)
HOW IT HAPPENED

- The Warriors are proving to be a resilient bunch and have come out strong in the second game of doubleheaders this season.  WSU scored six runs on seven hits in the bottom of the first inning.  Loconsole and Brad Baldwin (Troy, Mich. / Bishop Foley Catholic) began the rally with back-to-back doubles.    Harms, Tobey and Zach Girard (Sleepy Hollow, Ill. / Dundee Crown) all drove in a run, while Mergener plated two runs with a double down the left field line.

- Two hits produced a run for the Pumas in the top of the second inning.  The home offense kept clicking in the bottom of the second inning as the Warriors scored five runs on six hits and an SJC error.  JT Conti (Trenton, Mich.) highlighted the frame with a three-run double to left center.

- A combination of D.J. Zezula (Clarkston, Mich.), Nolan Dill (Bowling Green, Ohio) and Nick Cowen (Tecumseh, Mich.) held SJC scoreless for the final four innings. Justin Kelly (Wheaton, Ill. / Wheaton Warrenville South) crushed a two-run home run to left center to extend WSU's lead to 13-1.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
- Conti and Mergener finished with three hits each, while Conti led the way with three RBI.

ON THE MOUND
- Alex Kinch (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Pioneer) (3-3) pitched three innings and allowed one earned run on two hits, struck out three and walked three batters.
- Zezula tossed two scoreless innings, while Dill struck out two in his inning of work.
- Cowen finished the game with a scoreless frame.
