MIDLAND, Mich. -- The Wayne State women's tennis team (10-3 overall, 8-2 GLIAC) claimed second place at the GLIAC Tournaments after falling to top-seeded Grand Valley State (13-0 overall, 10-0 GLIAC) 5-3 at the Greater Midland Tennis Center on Sunday.
Freshman
Linda Liong (Tanjung Kidurong, Malaysia) was the lone double-winner for the Warriors, winning at No. 3 doubles and No. 5 singles. In doubles, she paired with
Irena van Meer for a 9-7 win over Abby Perkins and Liv Christman, winning 7-6 (4), 6-1 over Liv Hanover in the singles slot.
RESULTS
-Liong and van Meer were the lone doubles winners for the Warriors. Junior
Dasha Kuznetsova (Moscow, Russia) and senior
Liz Ghellere (Ararangua, Brazil) lost 8-3 to Allie Sweeney and Aimee Moccia at No. 1, while senior
Andreea Mitrache (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Warren Cousino) and freshman
Khadija Da-Silva (Burlington, Ont. / Robert Bateman S.S.) lost 8-3 to Madi Ballard and Nikki Heiniger at No. 2.
-The Warriors claimed two singles wins, as Kuznetsova earned a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Sweeney in the second flight.
-Ghellere lost to Perkins 7-6 (0), 6-3 at No. 4, and freshman
Brianna Douglas (Dayton, Ohio / Chaminade Julienne) lost 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6, with the match coming down to No. 3. Da-Silva and Moccia went to a three-set tiebreaker battle, with Moccia clinching the match for the Lakers after a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 win over Da-Silva.
