Softball Falls In Extra Innings

Clearwater, Fla. – The 10th-ranked Wayne State University softball team (2-3 overall) suffered a 5-1 extra inning setback to Eckerd College (6-5 overall) on the final day of the 2017 NFCA Leadoff Classic.

The Tritons tallied an unearned run in the top of the first as the leadoff batter struck out but reached on a throwing error by the WSU backstop.  Crystal Garcia then stole second and scored on a base hit by Rachael Luckett.

The Warriors had runners at first and third with one out in the bottom of the frame after a double by Lyndsay Butler (Cambridge, Ont.) and a single by Kristen Lucas (Newmarket, Ont.) but the next two batters struck out.

Emma Adams (Rockwood, Ont.) led off the second with a single and advanced to second on a bunt single by Megan Guitar (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington).  Both runners moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt by Ashley Messina (Troy, Mich.), but the next two hitters were retired.

Adams began the bottom of the fourth with a double, and pinch-runner Alea Kainz (Wyandotte, Mich. / Roosevelt) went to third on a sacrifice bunt by Guitar.  After a groundout, pinch-hitter Cammie McCracken (Bolivar, N.Y. / Portville Central) singled through the left side plating Kainz with the tying run.

Garcia knocked in the tie-breaking run with a groundout before Eckerd's Carrie Shere had a two-out, two-run single in the top of the eighth with the international tie-breaker rule being implemented.  The Tritons added an additional run on a fielding error by WSU on the next batter.

IN THE CIRCLE

Butler pitched all eight innings for WSU, allowing five runs (one earned).  She struck out 12 and walked four.

Nikole Van Gennep (4-4) earned the victory by scattering eight Wayne State hits in eight innings.  She struck out four and did not walk a batter.

LEADING THE WARRIORS

Adams was the lone Wayne State batter with two hits in the contest.

The Warriors left nine runners on base compared to four for the Tritons.
