CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Wayne State University softball squad improved to 15-5 overall with a 7-0 triumph over in-region rival Drury (10-11 overall) Monday afternoon. Monday's second game against Slippery Rock was rained out and will not be made up.
RECAP
Lyndsay Butler (Cambridge, Ont.) tossed a two-hit shutout and faced just 20 batters in a game shortened to six innings due to rain.
Butler scored the game's first run after leading off the bottom of the first being hit by a pitch.
Allie Buchanan (Cambridge, Ont.) followed with a single to right field, and with one-out
Brooke Turkalj (St. Jacobs, Ont.) delivered a run-scoring single to center after fouling off a pair of two-strike pitches.
WSU increased its lead the next inning as
Hannah McClounie (Essex, Ont.) had a one-out infield single and advanced to third on a two-out single by Butler. Buchanan then laced a 2-2 offering into right field plating McClounie.
The Warriors extended their lead in the fourth as McClounie drew a one-out walk, and with two outs, stole second base then third base before Butler drilled an RBI single to center.
Wayne State scored three times in the bottom of the sixth to complete the scoring.
Megan Guitar (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) hammered a 2-1 pitch over the center field fence leading off the frame. With one out, Buchanan reached on a bunt single and scored on a two-out double by Turkalj.
Kylee Barrett (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) then greeted reliever Destiny Bolen with a two-run home run to center field.
IN THE CIRCLE
Butler (9-4) struck out five and did not walk a batter in six innings, while allowing two singles.
Jessica Kjeldgaard (5-7) went 5.2 innings allowing six earned runs on 11 hits. She struck out one and walked two. Bolen faced two batters and allowed one run on one hit.
UP NEXT
After taking Tuesday and Wednesday off, the Warriors resume play on Thursday with games against Kutztown (1 p.m.) and California, Pa. (6 p.m.).
