Softball Extends Winning Streak To Five Games

Hurd notches first win of the season.

CARY, N.C. -- The Wayne State University softball team (11-4 overall) completed play at the Shaw Invitational with a 10-0 six-inning triumph over Clarion University (1-9 overall) Sunday afternoon.  The victory extended the Warriors winning streak to five games, and gives WSU nine wins in its last 10 games.

GAME RECAP

The Warriors snapped a scoreless draw with three runs in the top of the third, then added three more runs in both the fourth and the sixth innings with a single run in the fifth.

After Clarion left four runners on base in the first two innings, including a runner at third in both frames, WSU began the scoring in the top of the third.

Hailey Lazarek (Allen Park, Mich.) had a two-out bunt single, then stole second before scoring on a single by Lyndsay Butler (Cambridge, Ont.).  Butler proceeded to steal second, then score as Allie Buchanan (Cambridge, Ont.) reached on a bunt single.  Buchanan crossed the plate as Kristen Lucas (Newmarket, Ont.) reached on a fielding error.

The next inning, Kyle Barrett (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) had a leadoff double right.  After Emma Adams (Rockwood, Ont.) reached on a dropped fly ball, Megan Guitar (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) plated Barrett with a single.  Adams scored on Lazarek's infield single, with Guitar scoring as part of a double steal with Lazarek.

Barrett had a two-out double in the fifth and scored on a double by Adams to make it 7-0.

Hannah McClounie (Essex, Ont.) had a leadoff single to start the sixth and Guitar followed with a bunt single.  Lazarek advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt, before Butler drove in both runners with a single to right.  Butler advanced to third as the ball went through the right fielder's legs.  Lucas had an infield single to score Butler with the game's final run.

Junior Haley Hurd (Atwater, Ohio / Waterloo) notched her first win of the season (1-1) by blanking the Golden Eagles on two hits in six innings.  She struck out eight and walked three.
