DETROIT -- The Wayne State University baseball program (28-15, 18-8 GLIAC) battled Grand Valley State (27-17, 15-11 GLIAC) on Saturday to earn a split. The Lakers scored a run late in game one to force extra innings and GVSU would go on to win 6-1. In what looked like a mirror image of game one until the end, the Warriors won game two 1-0.
GAME ONE (L, 1-6 / 11 Innings)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- An RBI single from
JT Conti (Trenton, Mich.) gave WSU an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. That would stand up as starter
Chris Horvath (Lakeshore, Ont.) was sharp in the final home start of his career. He kept the visitors quiet with the help of
Taylor Horn (Leo, Ind.) (2-1) in the sixth inning. The Lakers loaded the bases in the sixth inning but WSU escaped with the lead intact.
- A fielding error opened the door for GVSU in the seventh inning and the Lakers tied the game with a two-out RBI single. The Green & Gold loaded the bases in the bottom of the 10th but were unable to collect the decisive run. The Lakers broke the game open with five runs on three hits and were aided by two WSU errors in the 11th inning. The Warriors went down in order in the bottom of the 11th to end the game
ON THE MOUND
- Horvath struck out eight batters over five and 2/3 innings and did not allow a run. Horn allowed three unearned runs before
Hunter Brown (St. Clair, Mich. / Lakeview) tossed the final 2/3 of an inning, allowing an earned run.
GAME TWO (W, 1-0)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In what would be a very similar contest to the series opener the Warriors threatened in the bottom of the first inning with a single and a walk but were unable to plate a run. Both sides were held scoreless until
Tristen Jorah (Clinton Twp., Mich. / Sterling Heights Stevenson) sent an RBI single through the left side to score
Griffin Harms (Bingham Farms, Mich. / Birmingham Groves) and give WSU a 1-0 advantage.
-
Jared Tobey (St. Clair, Mich.) (5-3) was excellent and led the Warriors to a shutout victory. He did not allow a hit until the fifth inning and danced around three walks in the sixth inning to not allow a run. An inning-ending double play aided Tobey's efforts.
- Tompson shut the door in the seventh inning for his eighth save of the season.
ON THE MOUND
- Tobey struck out three batter in six shutout innings, while Tompson allowed one hit his inning of work.
UP NEXT
- Wayne State will host GVSU for two games on Sunday and will honor its nine seniors prior to first pitch, which is scheduled for noon.
