Baseball Falls Three Outs Short of Regional Title Game

The Warriors topped Kentucky Wesleyan 4-3, before falling 8-5 to Quincy.

MIDLAND, Mich. -- The Wayne State University baseball program (34-21) needed to win two games on Sunday to advance to Monday's championship game of the NCAA Midwest Regional Tournament.  The Warriors edged Kentucky Wesleyan (29-24) 4-3, before falling to Quincy (35-21) 8-5.

Wayne State held a 5-3 lead heading into the ninth inning of game two, needing three outs to advance to face Northwood on Monday and compete for a regional title.  However, Quincy exploded for five runs on two home runs to steal a three-run victory.  The three NCAA Tournament wins match the most in program history since 2011.

GAME ONE vs. KENTUCKY WESLEYAN (W, 4-3)
HOW IT HAPPENED

- After a clean top of the first inning, Justin Kelly (Wheaton, Ill. / Wheaton Warrenville South) gave WSU a 1-0 lead with a towering home run in the bottom of the second inning down the left field line.  The Panthers tied the game in the top of the third inning with a run on a hit and one walk.

- Kelly's second home run of the game led off the bottom of the fourth inning and put the Green & Gold up 2-1.  With two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning, Jeremy Carrell (St. Clair, Mich.) doubled to right center and eventually scored on a Brad Baldwin (Troy, Mich. / Bishop Foley Catholic) RBI single.

- Three errors in the top of the sixth inning led to a KWC run, trimming WSU's lead to one.  Tristen Jorah (Clinton Twp., Mich. / Sterling Heights Stevenson) got that run back with a sacrifice fly to right field in the bottom of the sixth inning.

- Starter Tyler Waldrop (Grand Ledge, Mich.) (4-3) retired the side in order in both the seventh and eighth innings. Waldrop danced around a leadoff double in the top of the ninth inning and allowed a run to score on a wild pitch, but finished the game for his second career complete game.

AT THE PLATE
- Carrell and Kelly both turned in two-hit games, while Kelly drove in two runs.

ON THE MOUND
- Waldrop allowed two earned runs on two hits and a walk in the winning effort.

GAME TWO vs. QUINCY (L, 5-8)
HOW IT HAPPENED

- The Warriors struck first with two runs on a hit and a QU error in the bottom of the second inning.  JT Conti (Trenton, Mich.) highlighted the inning with a solo home run to right.  The Hawks responded with three runs on three hits in the top of the third to take a 3-2 lead.

- Conti connected again for a solo home run to right field to tie the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth inning.  Baldwin gave WSU a 4-3 lead with an RBI double down the right field line.  Jorah posted an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning with an RBI single to center.

- Josh Nelson (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline), who entered in the fourth inning, continued to be stellar on the mound for WSU.  He faced just three batters in the seventh inning, including an inning-ending double play.  Nelson struck out two batters in eighth inning to keep the two run lead in tact.  Tyler Tompson (Farmington, Mich.) was called on in the ninth to get the final three outs, but a leadoff walk and a two-run home run tied the game at 5-5.  He would walk two more batters before giving way to Nolan Dill (Bowling Green, Ohio) who gave up a three-run home run to give Quincy an 8-5 lead.  WSU went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the ninth inning to end the game.

AT THE PLATE
- Conti went 2-for-2 with two home runs and two RBI, while Baldwin also posted a two-hit game.

ON THE MOUND
- Hunter Brown (St. Clair, Mich. / Lakeview) started and pitched three innings, allowing three earned runs with four strikeouts.  Nelson struck out seven batters in five innings, allowing one hit.  Tompson was tagged with the loss and Dill allowed one earned run, before Brendan Wetmore (Westland, Mich. / John Glenn) pitched the final 2/3 of an inning.
