DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's tennis team improved to 3-0 overall and 3-0 in the GLIAC Saturday with a 9-0 win over conference rival Ashland (3-3 overall, 1-3 GLIAC) at the WSU Tennis Courts.
Junior
Dasha Kuznetsova (Moscow, Russia), the reigning GLIAC Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week, continued her hot streak, pairing with senior
Liz Ghellere (Ararangua, Brazil) for an 8-1 doubles win over Sofie Garpered and Hazuki Ogino. Playing No. 2 singles, she saw Garpered again, winning 6-0, 7-5. Ghellere faced Ogino for a second time at No. 4 singles, earning a 6-2, 6-1 win.
Senior
Andreea Mitrache (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Warren Cousino) made her debut at No. 1 singles this season and was the first one off the court. She won 6-1, 6-1 over opponent Brianna Brdicka. In doubles, she teamed with freshman
Khadija Da-Silva (Burlington, Ont. / Robert Bateman S.S.) to win 8-2 over Brdicka and Anna Hart at the second flight. Da-Silva, playing No. 3 singles, won 6-2, 6-2 over Camille Ringot.
Freshman
Brianna Douglas (Dayton, Ohio / Chaminade Julienne) made her debut in match action, pairing with fellow classmate
Linda Liong (Tanjung Kidurong, Malaysia) for an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles over Ringot and Natalie Keron. At the sixth singles flight, she won 3-6, 6-3, 10-7 over Allison Brooks. Liong won 6-1, 7-6 (1) over Hart in the fifth flight.
UP NEXT
The Warriors will hit the road for the first time in dual action, with three road events in five days. The road swing will begin Wednesday, traveling to Tiffin for a 2 p.m. GLIAC contest, followed by a Friday meeting at Saginaw Valley State (12 p.m.), and a Sunday showdown with Northwood.
