Football Nearly Shocks #2-Ferris State

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Wayne State University football team (2-7 overall, 1-5 GLIAC) suffered a hard-fought 38-28 setback Saturday afternoon at second-ranked Ferris State University (9-0 overall, 7-0 GLIAC).

After WSU punted on the first possession of the game, the Bulldogs drove 81 yards in six plays with Jayru Campbell completing a 22-yard touchdown pass to Dion Earls, just as the referee double-clutched on throwing a flag as Derrick Coleman was being held.

The Warriors responded with a 75-yard touchdown drive that took nine plays and 4:33 off the clock.  Sophomore quarterback Jake AmRhein (South Elgin, Ill.) completed a 42-yard scoring strike to junior Darece Roberson, Jr. (Muskegon, Mich. / Mona Shores) on the play following a six-yard reception by sophomore Steven Glenn (Lincoln Park, Mich.) on a third-and-five play.  Sophomore Ray'Jon Williams-Jackson (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Ypsilanti Community) had a 13-yard catch on a second-and-11 play early in the drive.

Following an unsuccessful onside kick by Wayne State, FSU's Jackson Dieterle connected on a 27-yard field goal capping a nine-play, 41-yard drive which put the Bulldogs in front 10-7.

WSU answered with a 70-yard touchdown drive which concluded with a one-yard plunge by junior James Hill (Livonia, Mich. / Clarenceville).  Two plays before the scoring play, graduate student Shane Hynes (Clarkston, Mich.) gained nine yards on a fourth-and-two fake punt, then AmRhein and Roberson teamed up for a 40-yard completion.

Ferris State regained the lead (17-14) on a 57-yard touchdown run along the sidelines by Campbell.

After the teams exchanged punts, the Warriors had a 14-play, 78-yard touchdown drive to put Wayne State ahead 21-17 on a two-yard scamper by junior DeOntay Moffett (Muskegon Hts., Mich. / Mona Shores).

FSU regained the lead with a six-play, 58-yard scoring drive as Campbell tossed a three-yard touchdown pass to Earls with six seconds remaining before intermission.

Junior cornerback Greg McDade (Sterling Hts., Mich. / Stevenson) intercepted a Campbell pass on the third play after halftime giving the Warriors the ball at the FSU 47.

Roberson had another big-time reception, as pass interference was declined, a 39-yard catch on third-and-five.  Hill scored on a three-yard run around the right end as he was able to stretch out the ball to hit the pylon.  Graduate student Paul Graham (Commerce Twp., Mich. / Orchard Lake St. Mary's) made his fourth consecutive PAT to give Wayne State a 28-24 advantage just 2:28 into the second half.

Unfortunately the WSU offense could not put any more points on the board, while Ferris State had a 77-yard touchdown drive capped off by a 15-yard run by Campbell on fourth down to go ahead 31-28.

FSU's Miles Jones had an eight-yard touchdown reception for the only points of the fourth quarter to complete the scoring.
