Football Falls In Season Finale At #8-Grand Valley, 45-21

Four costly turnovers subdue Warriors.

ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Wayne State University football team (2-9 overall, 1-7 GLIAC) ended its 2018 season with a 45-21 setback at eighth-ranked Grand Valley State University (10-1 overall, 7-1 GLIAC) Saturday afternoon.

The Lakers took the opening kickoff and drove 75 yards in 10 plays with Chawntez Moss scoring on an eight-yard rush.

Following a Warrior punt, GVSU extended its lead to 14-0 on a 61-yard scoring drive capped by a 22-yard touchdown reception from Grand Dempster.

WSU answered back with a five-play, 72-yard touchdown drive with junior James Hill (Livonia, Mich. / Clarenceville) scoring on a one-yard rush.  The drive began with a 59-yard run by Hill, the longest rush of the year by WSU.

The next two drives for each team ended in punts, before Grand Valley went 72 yards in four plays with Moss scoring on a 52-yard jaunt to make it 21-7 Lakers.

Wayne State responded with a 10-play touchdown drive that covered 75 yards.  Graduate student punter Shane Hynes (Clarkston, Mich.) rushed for 32 yards on a fourth-and-four near midfield.  Junior Darece Roberson, Jr. (Muskegon, Mich. / Mona Shores) hauled in a nine-yard scoring pass from redshirt sophomore Jake AmRhein (South Elgin, Ill.).

Late in the first half, the Lakers Nick Dodson caught a 12-yard scoring toss from Bart Williams to make it 28-14 at intermission.

After an exchange of punts to start the second half, WSU missed a 37-yard field goal attempt.

GVSU kicker J.J. McGrath connected on a 24-yard field goal to conclude a 73-yard drive in six plays.

The Warriors answered with a 68-yard flea flicker as sophomore tight end Steven Glenn (Lincoln Park, Mich.) was wide open down the right sideline for Wayne State's longest pass play of the season.  Graduate student Paul Graham (Commerce Twp., Mich. / Orchard Lake St. Mary's) third PAT of the contest pulled WSU within 10 at 31-21.

Following a Grand Valley punt, the Warriors advanced into Laker territory but a lost fumble that was returned 53 yards set up a 10-yard touchdown pass from Williams to Austin Paritee.

Another lost fumble and a 15-yard roughing the punter penalty on the Warriors, preceded a 10-yard touchdown run by Jack Provencher to extend the GVSU lead to 45-21 early in the fourth period.

Neither team scored in the final 12 minutes.
