KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- The Wayne State University baseball program (7-5 overall) took on Slippery Rock (5-2 overall) on Sunday as play continued in the Sunshine State Games and fell 11-7 after SRU scored seven late runs, which proved to be too much to overcome for the Warriors.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In the bottom of the second inning,
Tristen Jorah (Clinton Twp., Mich. / Sterling Heights Stevenson) doubled down the right field line to bring Troy Daring, Jr. (Brampton, Ont.) around to score and give WSU an early 1-0 lead. Â Four runs on four hits in the top of the third inning, including a three-run home run gave the Rock a 4-1 advantage.
-
Devin Rose (Farmington Hills, Mich. / Orchard Lake St. Mary's) singled and stole second to begin the bottom of the third inning. Â A
Justin Kelly (Wheaton, Ill. / Wheaton Warrenville South) double trimmed SRU's lead to 4-2. Â A fielding error in the bottom of the sixth inning allowed
Patrick Adams (Detroit, Mich. / De La Salle) to score and pull the Green & Gold within one. Â WSU tied the game at 4-4 on a groundout in the bottom of the seventh inning.
- Slippery Rock responded with two runs on two hits in the top of the eighth inning and five more in the ninth inning to stretch lead to 11-4. Â WSU scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning. Â Driving in runs for the Warriors were Kelly with a two-run double and Daring, Jr. with an RBI single. Â However, the comeback attempt would run out of time.
