GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Wayne State University men's tennis team (7-8 overall, 0-1 GLIAC) fell in its conference opener on Saturday, dropping a 5-4 decision to host Davenport (7-4 overall, 1-0 GLIAC).
Freshman
Niklas Karcz (Bottrop, Germany) was Wayne State's sole double winner. He earned an 8-5 doubles win with sophomore
Derek Sammons (Coldwater, Mich.) in the second flight, defeating Jonathan Bulmer and Matt McClurg. At three singles, he won 6-2, 6-0 over Jonathan Bulmer.
DOUBLES RESULTS
Juniors
Taylor Vane (Southampton, England) and
Griffin Mertz (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington) won 8-5 over Marc Lerch and Juan-Louis VanAntwerpen in the first flight. At No. 3, senior
Harvey Reed (Winchester, England) and sophomore
Jason Potter (Sterling Heights, Mich. / International Academy East) lost 8-6 to Remy Johansen and Max Hartman.
SINGLES RESULTS
Karcz and Reed were the lone singles winners, with Reed earning a 6-2, 6-0 win over Bulmer in the fourth flight.
At No. 1, Vane lost to Lerch (7-5, 6-3).
Mertz was defeated by VanAntwerpen, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 at the second flight.
Sammons fell 6-3, 6-3 to Johansen at the fifth flight.
Potter played the sixth flight, but was topped by Mike Digby, 6-1, 6-4.
