Baseball Falls Twice on Friday

The Warriors dropped game one 3-2 before losing the second game 12-4.

DETROIT -- After a rain-soaked series opener on Thursday, which was suspended in the top of the fifth inning the Wayne State University baseball team (10-12 overall, 1-5 GLIAC) and Ashland (11-8 overall, 3-3 GLIAC) played Friday's doubleheader as originally scheduled and the Warriors lost both games by scores of 3-2 and 12-4, respectively.

The resumption of game one will take place on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. prior to the series finale if the weather permits.

GAME ONE (L, 2-3)
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Warriors scored first with a run on two hits and an error in the bottom of the first inning.  A near double play would have allowed Ashland to escape without allowing any damage but a muffed throw at first base allowed WSU to plate the game's first run.  The Eagles tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the second inning thanks to two walks and two hit by pitches.  After a Troy Daring Jr. (Brampton, Ont.) double to left field and a groundout, Patrick Adams (Detroit, Mich. / De La Salle) gave WSU a 2-1 lead with an RBI infield single.  A walk, a hit and a wild pitch produced a run for AU in the top of the third inning to tie the game at 2-2.

- The Warriors threatened in the bottom of the fourth inning after a double by Tristen Jorah (Clinton Twp., Mich. / Sterling Heights Stevenson), a hit-by-pitch and a double steal but were unable to break the 2-2 tie.  The Eagles scored the go-ahead run in the top of the fifth inning without the help of a base hit as WSU hit a batter and issued a passed ball plus a wild pitch to lead to the unearned run.

- In the bottom of the seventh inning, Adams began the comeback attempt with a single through the left side and advanced to second on a passed ball.  Jacob Finkbeiner (Saline, Mich.) grounded out to second base, allowing Adams to move to third.  After an intentional walk to Brad Baldwin (Troy, Mich. / Bishop Foley Catholic), Ryan Mergener (Portage, Mich. / Portage Central) grounded out to shortstop to end the game.

AT THE PLATE
- Adams was the only Warrior to record multiple hits, going 2-for-4 with an RBI.

ON THE MOUND
- Jared Tobey (St. Clair, Mich.) (3-1) pitched all seven innings, allowing three runs (two earned), striking out 10, while hitting three batters and walking four.

GAME TWO (L, 4-12)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Ashland led 7-1 after the first three innings of game two.  A Mergener RBI single accounted for WSU's run.  Baldwin drew a bases-loaded walk to drive in a run and trim the deficit to 7-2.

- The Eagles scored twice on two runs in the top of the fifth inning and another run in the top of the sixth inning.  The Warriors tallied two runs on three hits in the bottom of the sixth inning.  Finkbeiner and Baldwin collected RBI in the frame to pull WSU within six, 10-4.  However, AU scored two more times in the seventh inning to make the final score 12-4.

AT THE PLATE
- Baldwin, JT Conti (Trenton, Mich.) and Josh Blaszczak (Brownstown, Mich. / Riverview Gabriel Richard) all posted two-hit games.

ON THE MOUND
- Dillon McInerney (Richmond, Mich.) (0-1) started and last two innings, allowing three earned runs before Brennan Cox (Taylor, Mich. / Riverview Gabriel Richard) recorded the next two outs, but allowed three earned runs prior.  Tyler Waldrop (Grand Ledge, Mich.) was called on to pitch out of the bullpen and worked three and a 1/3 innings, allowing four earned runs.  Brendan Wetmore (Westland, Mich. / John Glenn) tossed the final inning and allowed a run.

UP NEXT
- Wayne State and Ashland will attempt to complete the halted contest from Thursday at 11:00 a.m. followed by the final nine-inning game of the series.
