Baseball Earns Friday Split With Tiffin

Wayne State came back to win game two 7-6.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University baseball team (16-16 overall, 6-9 GLIAC) continued its four-game GLIAC series with Tiffin (11-19 overall, 5-10 GLIAC) on Friday and dropped game one 10-2 before a four-run fifth inning in game two powered a 7-6 comeback victory.

GAME ONE (L, 2-10)
HOW IT HAPPENED

- Two hits in the top of the first inning netted Tiffin a pair of runs and the Dragons used three hits and an error to score four runs in the top of the second inning to take a 6-0 lead.

- A JT Conti (Trenton, Mich.) sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third inning gave the Green & Gold its first run of the day but Tiffin stretched its lead to 7-1 with a run in the fourth and scored three more times in the sixth.  Michael Toth (Northville, Mich. / Detroit Catholic Central) sent a two-out single into left center in the bottom of the seventh inning and moved to second on fielder's indifference before Brad Baldwin (Troy, Mich. / Bishop Foley Catholic) smacked a double into left for WSU's second run.

AT THE PLATE
- Baldwin went 4-for-4 with an RBI, while Jacob Finkbeiner (Saline, Mich.) posted a 2-for-3 game.

ON THE MOUND
- Josh Nelson (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline) (2-2) allowed five earned runs over two innings on five hits and two walks.  Hunter Brown (St. Clair Shores, Mich. / Lakeview) struck out three batters but allowed four earned runs over three and a 1/3 innings.  Jack Schmidt (Fishers, Ind. / Indianapolis Cathedral) worked the final inning an 2/3 and did not allow a run.

GAME TWO (W, 7-6)
HOW IT HAPPENED

- Tiffin starting the game with three runs on three hits and a WSU error in the top of the first inning.  The Dragons added their fourth run in the top of the second inning.

- The Warriors trimmed TU's lead in half with two runs on two hits and two errors in the bottom of the second inning.  Troy Daring Jr. (Brampton, Ont.) singled home the inning's first run and a fielding error allowed Ryan Mergener (Portage, Mich. / Portage Central) to score after he reached via a single through the left side earlier in the frame.  TU answered with a leadoff home run to right field in the top of the third inning.

- Two Dragon errors in the bottom of the third inning produced WSU's third run of the game.  The Warriors took the lead with four runs on three hits and two more TU errors in the bottom of the fifth inning.  Finkbeiner started the scoring with an RBI single to right and Baldwin followed with an RBI double down the right field line.  A throwing error bu TU's second baseman allowed Baldwin to score and gave the Warriors a 6-5 lead.  An RBI groundout from Daring Jr. pushed the home advantage to 7-5.

- The Dragons used a hit, a walk and a hit-by-pitch in the top of the sixth to apply the pressure to reliever Dillon McInerney (Richmond, Mich.).  Taylor Horn (Leon, Ind.) entered the game with the bases loaded and induced a 6-4-3 double play, as Tiffin cut WSU's lead to 7-6 on the play.  Horn escaped the inning and worked a perfect bottom of the seventh inning to earn the save.

AT THE PLATE
- Patrick Adams (Detroit, Mich. / De La Salle) finished 2-for-4, while Daring Jr. tallied a team-high two RBI.

ON THE MOUND
- Nolan Dill (Bowling Green, Ohio) (2-2) started and allowed five earned runs over five innings, while striking out five.  McInerney did not record an out and allowed a run on a hit and a walk.  Horn earned his fourth save of the season by striking out two batters over his two innings of work.

UP NEXT
- The teams are scheduled to conclude the series tomorrow with first pitch set for 2:00 p.m.
