Softball Earns Split At Davenport With 5-1 Win In Game Two

CALEDONIA, Mich. – The Wayne State University softball team (21-18 overall, 6-12 GLIAC) ended a three-game losing streak with a 5-1 victory in the nightcap of a GLIAC doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Davenport University (27-16 overall, 12-10 GLIAC).  The host Panthers won the opener 5-0.

GAME ONE RECAP

DU scored twice in the bottom of the first on a two-run home run by Alexa Flores, then added a pair of runs the next inning on an RBI triple by Kennedy Crawford and a sacrifice fly.

The Panthers scored an unearned run in the sixth to complete the scoring.

The Warriors had six base runners in the game on four hits and two walks.  WSU had two-hit innings in the second and fourth innings, but was unable to score.

Freshman Presly Buchanan (Cambridge, Ont.) hurled the first inning and allowed two earned runs on two hits.  Rookie Bryanna Kressler (Kitchener, Ont.) pitched the final five innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits with two strikeouts.

Mallory Teunissen improved to 18-6 with her 10th shutout of the season.  She blanked WSU on four singles.  Teunissen struck out three and walked two.

GAME TWO RECAP

Wayne State grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first as freshman Rainey Psenicka (Guelph, Ont.) had a one-out single, and advanced to third on a double by sophomore Brooke Turkalj (St. Jacobs, Ont.).  Psenicka scored on a sacrifice fly by Kressler.  It would turn out to be Kressler's team-leading eighth game-winning RBI of the season.

The Warriors extended their lead to 2-0 in the third as sophomore Emma Adams (Rockwood, Ont.) had a leadoff double and went to third on a ground out before Kressler had a two-out RBI single.

The Panthers pulled within a run (2-1) on three hits in the third.

WSU tallied three runs in the fifth on just two hits.  Senior Kristen Lucas (Newmarket, Ont.) had a leadoff single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Psenicka.  After a four-pitch walk to Turkalj, Kressler greeted DU reliever Teunissen with an RBI double on an 0-2 offering.  Turkalj would score on a wild pitch with Kressler coming home on a fielder's choice.
