Baseball Sweeps SVSU as Ryan Kelley Collects 300th Win

The Warriors improve to 10-9 in league games this season.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University baseball program (20-16 overall, 10-9 GLIAC) completed a four-game sweep of Saginaw Valley State (19-21 overall, 4-15 GLIAC) on Sunday with a 10-8 comeback win.  It is the first four-game sweep of the season for the Warriors.  In the process, Ryan Kelley earned his 300th win as the Wayne State head coach.  Last season, he became the winninigest coach in program history, passing Rodger George.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Brad Baldwin (Troy, Mich. / Bishop Foley Catholic) doubled home the game's first run in the top of the first inning.  However, SVSU scored four runs on one hit and three walks in the bottom of the second inning to take a 4-1 lead.  A one-out triple from Patrick Adams (Detroit, Mich. / De La Salle) in the top of the third inning allowed him to eventually score on a passed ball, trimming the deficit to 4-2.  The Cardinals used a two-run double in the bottom of the third inning to extend their lead to 6-2.

-  Another RBI double gave SVSU a 7-2 advantage in the bottom of the fourth inning.  Adams plated a run with an RBI single after Devin Rose (Farmington Hills, Mich. / Orchard Lake St. Mary's) doubled down the third-base line.  Adams stole home for the inning's second run as WSU pulled within three, 7-4.

- WSU exploded for four runs on five hits and an SVSU error in the top of the sixth inning to take an 8-7 lead.  During the rally, Jacob Finkbeiner (Saline, Mich.), JT Conti (Trenton, Mich.) and Ryan Mergener (Portage, Mich. / Portage Central) all notched RBI.  The Green & Gold scored twice more in the top of the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly from Rose and an Adams RBI single.  After Adams gave WSU a 10-7 lead, he stole his fifth base of the game, which is a program record.

- SVSU got a run on a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning but that would be as close as the Cards would get.  The tying run did come to the plate in the ninth after a one-out single but Taylor Horn (Leo, Ind.) used a strikeout and a foul out to seal the win.

AT THE PLATE
- Adams reached base on four occasions, going 3-for-4 with two RBI.  He stole five bags and scored three runs.  Finkbeiner, Tristen Jorah (Clinton Twp., Mich. / Sterling Heights Stevenson), Rose all posted multiple-hit games.

ON THE MOUND
- Starter Addison Pawelek (Shelby Twp., Mich. / De La Salle) allowed four earned runs in an inning and a 1/3, while Hunter Brown (St. Clair Shores, Mich. / Lakeview) (2-1) earned the win, working four and 2/3 innings and allowing one earned run, while he struck out four batters.  Brennan Cox (Taylor, Mich. / Riverview Gabriel Richard) pitched the nest inning and did not allow a run on one hit before Horn earned his fifth save of the season, working two innings and allowing one run on three hits.

UP NEXT
- Wayne State will host Hillsdale on Tuesday for a single nine-inning non-conference game beginning at 3:00 p.m.
